It comes down to the old saying.

"If you can't find em GRIND em"

Sticks just not made for everyone.

marques1: You're RIGHT ON THE NOSE! NO issues with auto trannies in our beasts!!! MTs get bashed ALL THE TIME in these threads. ALSO, CR reports on MTs in their reliabilty reports on Zeds: It's the MT that gets the below-average history, consistently, NOT the ATs!!! So, next time we're in stop'n'go
traffic, just sit back & relax, m'friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

I heard that Nissan makes 2 transmissions for every Z. One goes in the car and the other is a spare.

That's probably for the MT. The AT are known to last a lifetime.

Haven't seen an automatic Z on the forum complaining about it breaking down.

Where have you found Consumers Reports differentiating between ATs and MTs in their reliability ratings? I've never seen Consumers Reports give different reliability ratings for the MT and AT on the Z. Latest ratings in the April 2008 issue for frequency of major transmission problems shows the 03 as well above average, and the 04 as above average. Frequency of major transmission problems for the 05 is below average and for the 06 is well below average. By far the 06 is the most reliable of all of the Zs from 03 to 06. This goes for transmission and all other areas as well. There is insufficient data to generate statistics on the 07.

I've got an 06 AT with 14,000 miles on it and no problems at all with the transmission.

I`m about to be on my fourth manual tranny and my Z has only 59k miles. Where Nissan f`d up was by dropping the Tremec manuals and going with a cheap generic. I`ve talked to Nissan directly, several dealers, and Nissan reps, and none of them will disclose who makes the 1990-present manual trannies for them. I`ve driven manual tranny cars all my life and never had any issues till my Z32. The Tremec boxes in my 280Z and Z31 never gave me any issues and I pounded the living sh** out of those cars. I drive my Z32 like a lil old man. The rest of the Z32 is built like a tank though. Body is solid as a rock as is the iron block VG30DE engine.

I too read the online reviews about the Z`s and they urge consumers to get the autos because of all the issues with the manuals (so unfortunate) as manuals are so much fun to own and drive. There`s actually a TSB for manual tranny gear grind issues for the Z32. Not sure about the Z33 though.

technically. .auto's are a tad faster anyway due to the no shift time that we require when driving a manual.
