Hey Guys,
I just bought a 2005 350z Touring used (well actually the bank bought it and they're letting me drive it around)
... and I've been looking through the forums and have been wondering
1) Why is the 2005 so unfriendly to mods (a lot of u guys have been saying this)
2) Why is it so much slower 0-60 than the 2003-2004?... is there a different engine? ... Doesn't it put out the same horsepower?
Thanks for bearing with me... i'm new to this... But i freaking love my Z

Welcome. I think you will find that without forced-induction the 350Z is about maxed out. “About” means that you will have a difficult time increasing wheel horsepower by 20 percent. That’s just the way that it is.
¼ mile times are posted in the drag racing forum. Strangely enough, except for 2 racers, the NA 2005 is missing from the lists.

The motors in the 03-05 are the same with the exception of the 2005 35th Anniversary Edition which has the "rev-up" motor, more HP less TQ. The 2006s also have the rev-up motor, however, 2007-2008 have an entirely different motor with slightly higher numbers.
I will agree with davidv 100%. The Z is tuned very well and pushes the limits of the motor, speaking NA of course. FI is an entirely different story.
I wouldn't necessarily say that it is really unfriendly to mods though. You can gain a reasonable amount of HP through NA (in comparison to other NA cars I've had). You can gain decent numbers with I/E/H, plenum spacer and other minor things. There are quite alot of guys out there that are NA and always continuing their search of slightly more HP. Not to mention, the more time that goes by, the more research that is dumped into production of NA mods.
In comparison though, if you're looking for high numbers... then you need to go FI.

What you will find is of the 03-05 version the 05 is the most reliable it is the year that most of the problems have been worked out. As for the 05 being slower then the 03-4 I can't say that it is. It has the same engine what you will find is the the Touring though the most popular Z sold it is the heaviest except for the GT having almost all the fancy stuff on them, some compare it to a slightly more powerful G35 thats in a 350Z suit. Through out the years 03-07 the Base and Enthuasit are faster because they are lighter with the same hp/engine thats just the way it is.
There are lots of ways to get more performance but its gonna cost you the twin turbos and force air induction system are running $8-$10k for the 350Z some people have 550hp Z pulling 12s or 11s in a 1/4 run but they got plenty of money invested. I'd say nitrious would be the cheapest meanful upgrade for straight line times.
But a Touring 350Z is for Touring not drag meets, though you won't do bad its not the best for this purpose the base models are faster.
