I bought my wife a new Supra in 1985. She took one look at the leather seats and breathed in that new car smell and vowed to never smoke in it. She kept her word and 3 months later gave up smoking for good. The Z will keep the new car smell for a long time.

My question is why would you want to drive down the Coast highway TO LA and not AWAY from it...like north to & thru Big Sur? Twisty roads a thousand feet up overlooking the blue Pacific. I think that's where my first long ride will be. But I'm inOrange County south of LA. Don't know where you are at.

Agreed, drove from San Simeon to Montery last year, great drive. Too bad I was driving my friends 1990 Crown Vic station wagon.

my favorite is when I did not allow smoking ever in my car, then I allowed it once because i didnt want to stop, and my friend dropped the ember on my seat!

also, the smoke sticks like super glue.

How about some nicorette?

Default smoking, coffee, etc...

If anyone on the face of this earth other than Anna Kournikova or maybe Jennifer Love Hewitt wants to blaze up, eat a whopper, drink coffee, or otherwise potentially screw up my Z while riding in it, they can walk.
I'm also seriously thinking about a "three strikes and you're out" rule for farting in it - but maybe that's going a bit far.
Naaaah.....

I'm in Gilroy, which is about 25 miles south of San Jose. I was thinking of going down Hwy 1 from here, which would take me past Monterey, Big Sur, etc. and continue towards the LA area only because that would be a good place to stop and go back the next day.

But now I'm thinking of just doing a few shorter trips over a few days; I just got impatient and wanted to get the break-in over so I could start flooring and redlining at will (yeah, sounds immature, but that's the fun of it).

i'm not condoning this type of break-in in anyway. just thought i'd let you know. sounds like a fun way to break in a car though!
Yet another good reason to skip my "break-in trip". I'll have to wait until the 1200 miles pass naturally. Well, I waited this long for the car, I'm sure I can do it!

Read my message above. She's the perfect wife! (And I don't care about the smoking thing like some people who are so obsessive about it. Anyone who lived in the 70s remembers that everyone smoked everwhere, all the time, in elevators, whatever, and nobody cared. Now people are psycho about it. I don't give a crap about politically correct attitudes towards things. I just know that when she saw I was in love with the car she told me to get it, no questions asked. That's more important than anything else!)

Then PLEASE, take it from The Doctor! GET HER TO QUIT! If she is so addicted to smoking that she can't even refrain from it for an hour or so to pick up your car, she obviously already has damage from it. She sounds like a great wife and mom. Do her, your son, and yourself a HUGE favor and do WHATEVER IT TAKES to get her to quit.

We're veering dangerously into the off-topic zone here, but when we first got married 7 years ago she tried to quit using "The Patch". It didn't work. Since then any mention of her smoking causes a problem. And since she is not the type of person who responds to someone telling her what to do (kind of like me) it's counterproductive for me to nag. She says someday she will quit when she's ready, and I have to leave it at that. Currently she smokes about a pack a day (Canadian cigarrettes only!) which is bad, but I guess it could be worse.

Hey, Dr. Bonz, I wonder if I can ask a question about my wife's bones (that sounds silly, but I'm serious). We got into a motorcycle accident a couple of years ago (yeah, my fault) and she broke both collarbones. They healed, but not exactly in the same position they were originally! (Sorry to impose on you but since you offered some advice on smoking, I thought maybe you wouldn't mind.) Maybe we can take this to off-topic?

reply to z350z:

I really love the Central California Coast. You could go south on the Coast Hwy & then just south of Lucia take the Naciemento-Ferguson Road & cross thru the Coast Ranges. You'll wind up being able to get back to the 1901 & then up to Gilroy ina big loop. Look at the Naciemento Road on the map. It would be a fun drive.

Thanks for the tip -- I never knew about this route. (I moved here 5 years ago and still don't know the whole area too well.) I think I'll try that out. Now all I have to do is get the car...

I assume "1901" is a typo for the 101? (Like a dummy I looked for hwy 1901 on the map until I realized the 9 is right next to the 0 on the keyboard! )

I can't find Naciemento Road, but I guess I will see Naciemento when driving along Hwy 1?

Yes. '1901' was sposed to be '101'. I am a dolt who does not check his spelling. I am looking at an old Thomas Bros. California map book page 64. I actually cannot recall if we ever drove the Nacimiento Road. I think we did several years ago. Hopefully it's paved! The map shows it as a solid wiggly line rather than a dashed one - I take that as meaning 'paved'.

I hear ya man. My wife is the same way. Doesn't like to be TOLD to do something but is the most generous person in the world when she does something on her own.

As for her clavicle fractures.........was there a question in there? I'll be glad to help if I can.

Reading about the z350z's break-in cruise from SJ through Monterey just makes me want to go home and visit my folks.

All I need to do now is find a fun girl to ride shotgun for _my_ break-in cruise.

On a side note... I noticed that leather interiors don't hold the smell as much... as long as windows are open and stay open throughout the smoke session. It's the fabric ones that lend themselves to smell fixation.
