This is the second thread I've read tonight about people putting their cars into neutral at high speeds. What is up with this...AND why? Am I too old to understand?

I have an 06' MT and put my Z in neutral all the time going down the long hills. That's fine for an MT but for your AT, you prolly slipped the N (neutral) to R (reverse) or even worse, P (park) while going at a high speed which will cause the wheel to lock. Like you said, "I was tired or....."

Modern AT has no effect whether the gear level is mistakenly shift into R or P while the car is at speed. The car will just keep rolling forward. Something else must have happened to cause the rear to lock up.

 

^ Oh, that makes more sense. I was trying to understand how coasting downhill in neutral on what I presumed was an MT was locking the rear wheels, since I coast in neutral quite often. Glad to hear you and everyone else involved are OK though...sounds like quite the incident.
