I wouldn't do that. You end up wasting gas. When you take the car out of gear and coast in neutral, the engine needs gas to stay running. When you coast in a tall gear, no gas is used because the cars momentum keeps the engine running. That's another experiment for you to try. Find a long hill, and reset the mpg counter at the top. Try coasting down in neutral. Then try coasting down in 6th gear without touching the gas. The latter experiment won't register anything on the gauge, since the computer cannot divided by zero (gas used). That would only work in an RSX and if chuck norris was driving. Besides, coasting down hills in neutral is a bit more dangerous due to having virtually no control over the attitude of the car.
I have done this and my car does measure a significant improvement on the down hill. i have seen 50+ MPG show up. doesn't last long, but i have seen it.

Default Oil change

I recently changed from Royal Purple (5w-30) to Amsoil Synthetic (5w-30). Prior to the change I averaged (city and hwy) 19 - 20 mpg. After the change to Amsoil, no exageration, I now average just over 23 mpg. I really couldn't believe it but I am now on my 4th tank of gas since the change and I know that I have not hcanged my driving habits.

+1

i just can't drive like the OP. i've tried it only once (shift early, drive slow, etc) when i was driving my 60+ year old aunt somewhere, and that was painful.

I average 16.5mpg in mostly city driving, some highway mixed in too

its too fun to drive fast!
