If you have an infant or child in the front seat, the explosive force of the air bag deploying can do more harm than good. The kill switch will give drivers the option of turning it off if the passenger isn't large enough to benefit from an air bag.

Default Just called Nissan Consumer Affairs...

.. to get information regarding what can be done about adding this switch to the '03 Z's. The salesman at the dealership flat out stated a rear facing child seat could be put in the car do to a new generation of airbags that detected if a childseat was in the car. I was a bit dubious about it but as we don't have any children (yet) it wasn't a big stickler point on the purchase of the car.

When I got home one of the first things I saw was the information about not putting rearfacing child seats in the car w/o first having the airbag shut off.

I'm hoping to get the dealership forced into putting this into the car as the salesman was incorrect in his statement (also made mention to this in my survey report I received from Nissan before the information about the '04 was even out.)

We'll see how it goes.

Default where is the switch??!!

does anybody know where it is? i have a 2004 touring roadster and according to the manual, there is no switch.

i was just quoted $500 to have one installed. the manual states that i need to get that letter from the national highway... whatever.. nhtsa? i got it....

then it says i gotta take the car with the letter to a service place... it doesnt say anything about the switch. if i have one, that would be wonderful.

HELP!!!

RTFM. It says you can go the dealer to get it installed. They do not come with it according to MY 2004 manual.

Look into the 03 and 04 brochure for the Z, it is stated as an option, I just called nissan customer service 1-800-Nissan-1, they told me to call any dealers in the parts department for the quote.

Here are the 2 seperate parts Number
Airbags Harness : 24170-CD025
Switch Parts: B5580-77J02

Good Luck & and have fun taking your kids !!!

I just bought an 04 Roadster and it does not have the kill switch, not even as an option. It has to be installed after getting approval from NHTSA.

I just looked into this. The dealer will sell it to me, about $300 - but they won't install it due to liability concerns...

Who can I have install it in SoCal?

How ridiculous is it that dealers won't install these when you have a letter from the federal gov't stating that you can? What has this country become?

It's a sad state of affairs....

I need to get this done as well (need to get letter first). Anyone find any place/dealer that would do it in the South Bay (just south of L.A. California) ??? Also, the kicker is that if you read the NHTSA they have the figures and reasons why the air bag deaths occurred and it seems the main issue is proximity to the airbag. If the seat (regular facing, NOT rear facing in my case), can be placed more than 10 inces from the airbag, it seems like there wouldn't be a problem. In theory.

There is a list of installers on the NHTSA website. Also, Performance Nissan in Duarte said they would do it. I sent my request and am waiting for my letter of authorization.

OK, here is the link.

http://www.airbagonoff.com/

I was going to have the dealer do it in my Z until I saw what it involved. The dealer provided the parts for free as part of my sale. However they would have had to practically take apart the whole inside of the car just to install one little switch. And my car woud have been their first attempt at it. So I passed on it.

Just traded in my Miata for my Z. Passenger side disable switch was in the center console. It was activated/deactivated with the ignition key and had a amber light to indicate whether it was armed or unarmed.

I looked at the site and I don't see where it states this. I did see "Driver/passenger intelligent front air bags" but the question is, if they're smart, how are they smart? I have a 5 year old and I'd like to keep her out of harms way.
