got rear ended....quick question
So I got rear ended merging onto the expressway. I was pretty much stopped and someone hit me doing about 15-20 mph. Damage cosmetic wise is almost unnoticed except for some scratches and my left exhaust tip pushed back about 5 inches or so. Now for the weird part. The car was in tiptronic/manumatic/slap stick (I have a 5 a/t obviously) whatever you wanna call it at the time of the accident. As soon as I got hit I tried to put the car in park but the shifter is locked in the tiptronic gate. It moves up and down and to the left but won't actually go anywhere. Along with that the car won't move. It runs. Revs. Turns off and on but wouldn't move at all. Tow truck came and I have no idea how they got it on the bed cause I was filling out info but we got to the tow yard and the car will move forward but still won't shift out of the tiptronic gate.
Any ideas what could be wrong? We thought maybe the other car (07 grand prix) got under my car and pushed everything forward. Hence why the exhaust is so far back and maybe it hit drive shaft/tranny/ whatever else. Any ideas?
Thanks. Sorry its so long.

the exact same thing happened to me a few months ago. Below is the link to my thread i started. Basically what happened was that i was also in manual mode and got rear-ended and my car would start and turn off, but it was stuck in manual mode. I was told from the shop that it was the shift link. Sorry to hear about your accident, but at least your okay!

Thanks for the replies guys. The officer on the scene told me that in the trunk area of my car there is a reset switch that will reset the car back to normal? She said her Crown Vic patrol car has one for when she gets rear ended.... I have no idea if this is true (doesn't sound like it at all) but either way I kind of wanted to tell her she has played to much video games haha.
Now on a serious note... From what I've read everyone is saying sensors, is THAT something that they reset or is there new parts involved or how do they go about that? Hopefully I'll be getting it towed to a shop today. I'm hoping to get an after market exhaust out of this because mine is f***ed. What are the chances? And should i tow it to a Nissan dealer or private shop (we have some friends that own shops that are real nice, just don't know what insurance will say, guess we'll find out!)

^^^ The officer was talking about the fuel cut off switch. It is a safety measure when the car is in an accident so the fuel is automatically shut down to aid in preventing a possible fire. Usually located right inside trunk but Im not sure if the Z has one...probably does under carpet or something but never looked into it. No it has nothing to do with your transmission. Good luck with that.
My guess is your shifter linkage is bent or partially disconnected. It sounds like your transmission is in neutral but your shifter is somewhere else.
It should only start in P or N, so the P/N switch thinks it's in P or N. If it revs without moving then it must be in P or N.
I would rather have a Nissan dealer fix this rather than a body shop. .... But in most cases I would rather have my favorite body shop do the paint & body work instead of a Nissan dealer.
You might be better off taking it to Nissan first, then once driveable take it to your favorite body shop.
Your insurance will likely pay list price + labor for a new Nissan muffler. Most private body shops will gladly install whatever you want as long as they can get it in their hands on time without much extra work on their end.
Of course you'll have to be the "project manager" to pull all that off and might have to up-front some of the payments yourself. Your insurance company certainly wont do the administration on 2 shops + aftermarket parts. If you want it done easy, just haul it to Nissan and let them call you when they're done!
