Default anyone ever imported a car from Japan

Will likely be sending back my 2003 350z with APS twin turbo car back to california.

Has anyone else done this before, if so any leads to companies that handle the import process and any guidance on the mods that would have to be made to make it street legal in california (besides the removal of the APS turbo kit)

thanks

not positive, but I think the car has to be disassembled into parts and then shipped as parts and then reassembled in America "to be legal"

Wait wait! http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CARS/RULES/IMPORT/

Ok if the car has a jap. vin you need to check to see if that particular model is available for import on the website!

If it is then find a Registered Importer near your port of destination.

Do what he tells you! Be certain 200% that the vehicle can be imported!

However to save you time, the 350z is not on the list so it has to be petitioned.

Hope you got deep pockets cause that gets pricey because of the gamble you take!

I assume this is JDM?

Several members have questioned getting a JDM 350Z from Japan to the United States. None that I recall have been successful.

Join the Navy or Know someone that is in the Navy. When they go to Japan they are allowed to bring one car back with them. I've seen 3 Skylines here in SD because of this and a RHD Integra.

if a car has been crash tested in the US it's legal that's why the r33 is legal. I believe you just have to pay like 5k for transfering all the documents and stuff over not to sure about that.

Wrong! Sorry that is not correct sir! They might be able to bring it back but that doesn't make it legal to be released from customs, or the R.I. for use on public roads.

Also they didn't start "serious" crash testing in japan unitl 2000's. Before that they only wanted to insure the car wouldn't catch fire and explode. The vehicle in question was produced after that time period. When you petition they want to be able to compare apples to apples. So its best to conduct crash testing here in the states. Once again not worth the risk.

Sure its more comfortable to drive a RHD car if your right handed, but for the money I would rather have the JDM parts on a USDM spec'd 350z.

Just my .02!

it would be much less hassle to sell it over in Japan (if someone will buy it...i know they hate used stuff) then just redo it all again over here

Seriously i've talked to a bunch of people who have brought skylines over (mostly r32's and toyo about their r34 in fd) to the US.

Anything but a r33 is considered a threat to national safty on the road, idk why.

You can legally bring anything over but it's not street legal.

When i say crash testing i mean in the usa if anyone was too retarded to figure that out. USA crash tests all the cars that are sold in the us. some rich guy bought a tone of r33's and crash tested them so a 350z is legal in the us no mattere where it's from.

Well the guy I talked to had his legally here but he had to change the exhaust, windows and a couple other things, but here in california it is legal to bring cars from japan and they will be released from customs after a few grand and a few months and then the registration is about 2-3K a year, they also create a VIN for you. The best way is to ship the exhaust, engine and chassis separately. Thats how most importers do it. With enough money you can do anything, but I agree with the quote above that buying a USDM spec 350 and loading it up with JDM stuff is much better and easier.

Look I'm not going to argue with you! What you talked with other people about, I have done. If you would just take a few minutes to read the rules and regulations you would not have written what you did!

You sir are correct to some extent about the R33. However until you have imported/exported USDM, JDM or Euro vehicles, then don't speak on anything you have no experience at.

I knew you were discussing crash testing in the USA so therefore I'm not mentally challenged. If you knew what you where talking about then you would have understood that you don't have to crash test a vehicle in America to make it legal to drive in America.

Cheers and I appreciate your .02!

He's right, collectible action figures! It's true and very shameful! I just couldn't resist the Kim Jong Ill figurine.

Thread close. Sorry Ether.

I know a little on the subject but not much. What does the R33 crash test have to do with bringing in a 350z. Also what does bringing a 350z have to do with importing a Fairlady Z.
