For around $3K get a Honda/Acura.
I was driving a 1994 Acura Integra LS 5 Speed during my long driving days and it was worth every penny. Just sold the car 3 weeks ago for $3500. I made money on it because everyone wants a cheapo beater or something and mine was in excellent condition for a 94.
