$900 inspection!?!? WTF
This was fun, I drop off the car at the dealership for an inspection and emissions. Even had me a coupon for a free emissions test with an inspection NICE
I saw the salesman I bought my X-terra from and he comes outside to take a look at the car. Yada yada yada tickle my yam bag... and he tells me to pull it inside NICE
I get a call this morning from the service dude
Service Dude: "Ok you dropped off the 2003 Z right"
Me: "Yes"
Service Dude: "good news, Your AC is nice and cold" (I asked them to check it)
Me: "odd but ok, and..."
Service Dude: "Ok your gonna be right at 1840"
Me: ........"Do you mean Hundred?"
Service Dude: "Yes"
Me: ..........(had to pick my ***** up off the floor) "Ok could you tell me exactly what you intend to do for $1800 dollars?"
Service Dude: "Well you need new wipers............and a bulb for your tail light"
Me: "AND?..." I'm convinced this guy is an ******* at that point
Service Dude: "Looks like you need two tension rods, left and right"
"yeah the tech said its a little worn on the bushings"
Me: "Really? I've never heard of those. And you say that it wont pass inspection without those what did you call them? tension rods.."
Service Dude: "Yep"
Me: "Do ya think you can tell me how much those rods are?"
Service Dude: "They're $376.00 a piece"
Me: "Your still pretty far away from $1840.00"
Service Dude: "Well then you will need an alignment for $79.00, And the wipers are $48.30. Then there's your 60,000 mile service for $399.00. Your Drive Belts for $147, Throttle body service for $74.95, Fuel injector service for $119.00"
Me: "And Pennsylvania requires those things for me to get my sticker?"
Service Dude: "Well no.. I guess you could get the inspection for right around $900, that will include the new wipers oh and that bulb you need"
Me: "I appreciate your time, I have to take it somewhere else, don't do anything to the car"
Now my father was an general mechanic who did inspections for about 35 years, I asked him and he never heard of a car not passing inspection from a "tension rod"
The part number listed on the sheet is 54468-CD00C and 54469-CD00C
Still I cant find the tension rods only tie rods. I don't doubt him about the price, I just don't intend to purchase these "rods" from a dealer that charges $48.30 for wipers. I also will inspect these myself.
Oh it gets better. So I pick up the car tonight no problem, I paid for the emissions test (Which I passed) and got in the car and drove home.
On the Highway I hit about 50 mph and it sounds like my body kit came off and is dragging underneath the car
I quickly pullover, hit the 4 ways and jump out to see. Nothing.. all the pieces are fine, nothing is dragging, I get in and roll forward slightly, nothing. Traffic was a little busy and there wasnt much room on the shoulder so I resume my drive and right around 45 it starts again. I pull over look nothing, pop the hood, nothing.
I figure this is BS so I take it nice and slow around 35mph home. I look under the car and the technician did not put any of the bolts into the front of the under-tray. OK whatever, I'll just bolt it up and no biggie. Wrong, it's now ground down to the point where there's no more holes.
And even better yet, this whole action pulled my bumper away from my fender. Now I keep the car in a garage and only take it out on nice days. I had just spent 6 hours washing, claybar, polish, and giving it the wax treatment. I look down and
:

And of course
:

NOT NICE
Now this all happened on the highway before I even reached one exit. Had I returned immediately returned to the dealership, there would have been no change in the damage done.
I call the dealership and very nice and politely recount my tale, the receptionist gets the info and asks if I want a manager, "Yes please".
He apologizes and asks me to bring the car down to have them look at it.
I can only imagine how this is going to all play out

$7000 and the dealership will have her running like a champ
Seriously, that's one f'ed up dealership. Sad part is; I'm willing to bet more than one customer has fallen for their line of BS and spent lotsa money...
Good luck.

I know the dealership charges around $110 per hour for labor but 1800...god damn...To let ya know. I got that 60k mile inspection at the first point its ""suppost"" to be done...35k I believe...It took a little over 6 hours for them to do a job that would take under an hour...Thank god I got out of paying the labor other wise it would have been over $700 in labor alone...wtf is that. Never again will I go to a dealership for service...except my free oil changes.
I can only imagine what is running through your head when you get your car back and the car starts falling apart...GL with getting that fixed, I feel your pain.
edit: oh....florida ftw!

the issue is most people do not know one thing about cars, and when they bring them into a dealer or repair shop, they expect honesty and good advice. the issue is, most dealers/repair shop lack these qualities.
btw OP, if someone left my car like that, i would literally drop them.

I guess they are called stealerships for a reason. When I first bought my Z, the antenna was messed up and I ended up taking it to a Nissan dealership. They wanted $420 to fix it.....luckily the dealer I bought the car from paid the tab. Since then, I haven't been back there because if an antenna costs that much to fix, I don't want to know how much real car problems cost to fix there. Hopefully they rectify the error they made and fix your car.

That is bloody ridiculous! They should pay for a new undertray (like $150 at most dealerships) for this mistake. Plus they should refund you the cost of the emissions test as a courtesy.
Seriously what kind of places tells you, "uhh yeah you need new wipers and a light bulb for your tail light". Not only is that something any moron can figure out with some effort,
So the inspection is $400... and they will charge $500 to install new wipers and a light bulb? Am I missing something here?

i did, and if you had checked your car prior to leaving the dealership you would have found the bolts missing, therefore preventing you from having this damage in the first place. like i said, i hope you learned a lesson

haha...are you serious? do you really perform a 100 point inspection after taking your car to the dealership? I don't blame the OP for assuming that his body work would still be in tact after taking it to the stealership. It's not his responsibility to crawl under the car and make sure every bolt is in place!? Obviously the stealership screwed this one up. And the lesson to be learned is...don't go to the stealership...not to inspect every bolt of your car!OP....good luck...sounds like you've got a heck of a dealership here. If I were you...and they tried to NOT pay for it...Just go to their sales floor during busy hours...and make a huge stink about how their service department just ruined your car and won't fix it. Do this loud enough when it's busy...and they'll make it right. Bad PR works wonders....
Seriously that sucks, but.... i'm not really surprised. Dealerships prices need to be regulated, that way the real mechanics won't be opressed by "big bad" stealerships. Service Department, lol, the only thing they service you on is emptying your wallet.

Man, that's tragic! As professional as your dealership may seem, I'm convinced that many (not all) have a transiant service staff that is careless and ignorant shrowded by slick service advisors in the front office who have never turned a wrench in their life. Jeez, 'working on cars 101' says keep track of the bolts you remove and make sure they all go back in.
And give me a break. It's not the drivers responsibility to crawl under the car and check everything when leaving a service center, particularly a Nissan dealer.
