Cool Market Update: Nissan 350z

I have been seeing a lot posts about prices of 350Z, and there is a lot of variance in the market.

I own a small automotive research company and have built a database that has 95% of all cars currently for sale (pretty neat, providers like KBB and Edmunds have only partial data). Attached you will find couple of simple histograms of 350Z price distribution by year.

If there is enough interest in this I would love to provide monthly/quarterly updates of the 350Z market to the forum.

Basic Statistics:
Total 350Zs For Sale: 5230 (+/-56)
o 2003: 623 Units, Mean Price=$17,722 Median Price=$17,490
o 2004: 945 Units, Mean Price=$20,685 Median Price=$19,999
o 2005: 800 Units, Mean Price=$23,033 Median Price=$22,995
o 2006: 637 Units, Mean Price=$25,276 Median Price=$24,993
o 2007: 358 Units, Mean Price=$32,738 Median Price=$32,042
o 2008: 1737 Units, Mean Price=$35,989 Median Price=$35,173

Note1: Units may not add up to Total For sale because not all cars have a set sale price.
Note2: Charts Have Price In Dollars on the hor. axis, and %of total Cars on the Vert. Axis.
Note3: If there is interest I can break down prices by Base/Enth/Touring/Nismo

That is interesting. I'm sure it might be proprietery but from what sources are you getting this information? Does it include private transactions? What about insurance claims where the vehicle is a total loss and the insurance compainy writes off the car?

Thanks,

We're not getting this data illegally, a lot of sellers/dealers/etc. just share it.

It does not include private transactions, hopefully within a year we'll take this data live and people will be able to get self-reported data. Don't have the resources for that now...

Unless the Insurance company decides to sell the vehicle vs throw it in a dump then this will be included.

Have you noticed a sharp decline of prices/values in vehicles that are more bought as a second car like the Z vs economical choices due to the current economy

That's true, if you look at the distribution of prices, about 30% of all 2005Zs are under 18k

Have not had the time to do any R&D with the data -- still in the process of putting together databases.

I'm not sure how one would attribute price fluctuation directly to the economy. For example, the Zs value is at a year low during winter months.

Hopefully soon we'll be able to do some analysis on this data and track changes

I have heard since I bought my 2005 z many people claiming a 2005 should be around 18 or 17k. I have even heard I had overpayed, which I still do not believe, regardless, I don't know where this false image is coming from as the overwhelming majority of 2005 Z's I have seen have been anywhere from 20k at a low to 26k at a high. The 18 or 17k 2005's usually have higher millage and because of the nature of the car, they are usually sold with relatively low mileage (15k miles to 30k miles).

This is good information, however a future idea might be to include a field related to miles on the car. It would be interesting to see the average miles a car had on it when sold for certain prices.

And what are you basing this generalization on?

<--Has a strong interest in this, as my '05 is about to be for sale.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I purchased an 05 Touring in April and believe I paid a little too much for it. Yet I'm still seeing similar Touring 05's go for 23k-26k. Like you said, alot of the 05's in my area that are sub 20k are averaging higher mileage and/or slight damage or some other fault.

Alot of 06's are averaging cheaper than the 05's... I think some people finally caught on to the oil consumption issues

Maybe I did pay too much, but buying an 05 Touring from a one owner 70 year old man that garage kept it, no accidents, not one single blemish I could find and 20k miles on a three year old car made it worthwhile (peace of mind I suppose) for myself.

Sorry for the OT... pretty cool info btw.

+1. The 2005 is the best year for the Z, and will retain more of it's value. Fay = dud.

Can you isolate the sales geographically? Any thoughts on where
the sales originated from? I travel the east coast and have seen
some pretty wild variance - imo based on income distribution of the
local area. Without a doubt, certain parts of the country have more
"accessible" pricing structures - in line with more widely felt effects
of the economic downturn depending on local economic drivers and
business.

Maybe this weekend if I have time I'll breakdown the data geographically and by mileage.

How old is the data? One month, 6 months?
