Default A/T question

Hi guys,

Is it necessary to switch the A/T from "D" position to "N" or "P" during long stops (for example at long traffic lights) ?

the op is probably wondering if he can save gas by shifting to N or P while stopped or coasting downhill.

Hahaha... You know what's funny? The Z is the first automatic I've ever driven. (I know.. A/T?? WTF?!)

Anyways, I kept asking my friends if the way the car's acting is normal with A/T. Like the "swayed" stops. Because the engine downshifts so damn HEAVY. OR, the transmission pause.. CONFUSING. So, maybe he's being sincere and you guys are all just being dicks.

And no.. going "N" actually wastes more gas.

Swayed stops? WTF does that mean? And how do you mean it downshifts heavy? Is is jerking into the lower gear? If it is doing that something is screwed up it should be smooth. Is this in manual mode or auto mode BTW?

I think the guy is serious, as he is from Prague. A/T might be uncommon over there.

The auto trans shifts into first smooth when in the full auto mode. When in the manual mode, The first downshift is done to 4th when manual is selected. 4th to 3rd is done manually, 3rd to 2nd, manual. If you don't manual shift 2nd to 1st, the trans will do that shift. That last down shift is a little harsh when the tranny does it. If done manually, it is smoother.

Yup. Swayed stops. ..on full auto. Its kinda like, not really jerks into lower gears, but... I can feel the downshifting. So, this isn't normal. I knew it!! ****, that's why I HATE A/T. Should I get it checked?

It usually wont downshift into 1st until you are under 8 MPH. However if you downshift into 1st manually, and you are at around 20 MPH or more then you will probably feel it once it gets into gear after revmatching. Is that what you mean by swayed stops? Kind of like the brakes are going on but your not on them?

No. Fully automatic, not manual shift mode. I'll feel it downshifting. Freak, that's why I asked some people... It just didn't feel right, but.. Like I said, it's my first time driving an A/T. Even if I do kick it into manual shift mode, I never downshift into first. I'll let the car do that itself. I'll bring it down to two that's it.

Even in auto mode I don't feel it downshift unless I increase throttle. If i'm off it completely I don't feel it...

I make it go into 1st in manual all the time, but thats just because I want to drift around the corner and waste tires away. Good fun though...

sometimes you can feel it downshift itself if your paying attention.
