sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I'm from England and own a clio, which I have gradually turned into a bit of a show car and gave it the numberplate "L99 UST".

Basically I understand that Nissan like to put this plate on some of their 350z's (the orange one they lent to Top Gear etc "L22 UST" and I think there is a white racing type one with the same style plate).

I am currently trying to raise some cash and have decided to try and sell my private plate, and was hoping to get in touch with the approprisate department of Nissan to see if they would be interested in buying it off me, to put on one of their current/future 350's.

If anyone can offer me any advice on this, that would be much appreciated.

I dont get the meaning behind the plate though. L22 UST ?? I see the word lust, but whats the deal with the 22?

I think the 22 is just a random number. They probably choose the same 2 numbers to make the word stand out more.

In England private plates (vanity plates) fetch big money especially the ones that spell something.

The plates usually begin with a letter and then have one or two numbers followed by three letters. (there are some exceptions which fetch even more money). People try to make up things, hence L22 UST can be used to represent Lust even though the 22 is present.

They can be great investments. I bought one several years ago when I lived in England (I'm British) and it is already worth a lot more than what I paid.

hmm...in greece there was a club that had the words of the 7 deadly sins......Lust, Gluttony, Sloth, Greed, Envy, Pride, Wrath, as there plates. I think they were part of the SEAT LEON club!

 

is it not possible to order a tag with whatever you want on it in england? so these were just luck?

 

No, its really difficult to get a custom plate in UK. License plate has to include numbers and alphabets accordingly.

It is different in the UK. The plate stays on the car normally so when you sell you car, the plate stays on it. However, you can also buy any plate you want and then transfer or sell it. The DVLA (Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency) sells them and also private companys specialize in buying and selling them.

When you buy a plate it becomes your property. If you don't have a vehicle to put it on, you can fill out a retention form and get a certificate to show you own it.

I bought a plate about 8 years ago for about 250 pounds and it is now worth about 3000+

 

Sell it on Ebay. Fools will buy Jesus toast why not a license plate.

 

In the U.K. you can sell your plate to other individuals so they can have the plate. The information is the appropriately switched to the new owner.

My dad did this for his Lotus Elan to get a plate he wanted when we lived back in England.

 

Some US states do it too. A $675k sale in Delaware made national news earlier this year.

Frank Vassallo IV of Wilmington, Delaware, just bought license plate number 6 for $675k at auction, and admittedly was prepared to spend up to a million.

It all started over a century ago, when Delaware first started issuing plates - in numerical order. The wealthy people who got their cars first go the lowest numbers - and a status symbol was born.

Today, plate number “1” is reserved for the governor, “2” is for the lieutenant governor and “3” for the secretary of state. All the rest can be bought and sold on the open market.

 

In the UK the licence plate provides information on the year of manufacture and place of registration of the car. As such, the plates are manufactured in a numeric and alphabetical order. Therefore, sometimes unique plates are produced by chance. When someone buys a car they retain the rights to the licence plate on that car. If it is unique, that person can sell the plate. However, you can not buy a plate that has an older registration than the year of manufacture of the car! When you do buy a plate (from the government or private sale) you can keep that plate for life and transfer it to your new cars (for a small fee), or you can leave it on the car you sell and the rights go to the new owner, or you can sell it on for a greater fee.

Thus, personalised plates are harder to obtain and more expensive in the UK than in the US. I used to go by a house in London every day that had an Aston martin and a Rolls Royce side by side with the registrations 2 BE (Aston Martin) NOT 2 BE (Rolls Royce). Pretty cool!!!
