Default Causes for drop in MPG

I used the search button and all I could find was what MPG people were getting.

I've been doing the same route for the past year and my gas light would always go on at about 360 miles to the tank. I once got 400 miles on a tank (I thought I was going to be walking though) My gas light now turns on at about 330 miles and I'm lucky to get 355 until I fill her up again. I have not changed my driving habits.

Any theories on why my mpg dropped?

winter gas. Looks like you live up in the northeast so I'm guessing they switched over.

1) As mentioned, winter gas.

2) Even without the winter formulation, cars normally get lower mileage in colder weather. (The A/F charge is more dense)

I'd never even heard of winter gas until I read this:

Thanks guys. I hope this is true because I couldn't figure it out.

Did the write of the article contradict himself at the end? Seemed confusing.

hmm my theory for my low MPG this season would be:

- lowered gas price
- right foot got heavier
- never shift at 2500 RPM anymore

When the gas prices were hiGH, I was getting 22 to 25 mpg. With the lower prices I'm seeing 17 to 21 mpg. Probably my lead foot.

Everyone please drive slower even though gas prices are down. We need the demand to stay low.

*that way I can speed cheaper*

Thanks!

some gas stations mix ethanol in with the regular gas now which can cause a decrease...like 10% ethanol

I don't have a z yet, but when I drive up north in my Eclipse, I fill up and it's 10% ethanol. I get better gas mileage.

I think it's probably your driving habits. I have reigned in my right foot lately and have been shifting at 2k to 2.5k. It's not as much fun, but more rewarding when you do get to open up.

You can't really get an accurate picture of mpg by just seeing how many miles between fill ups. It may be that the pumps you are using lately shut off a bit sooner, or you aren't running it down as low, etc... Keep track of the gallons used to fill up and calculate your mpg for a few tankfuls and see what it is doing. My guess would be the winter fuel however.

other reasons for lower mpg:

tire pressure
bald tires
loose intake hose

How do bald tires cause lower mpg?

You should never smell smoke... unless you drive a ford.
