Crazy idea.....
Ok, you're all going to think I'm mad, but I'm thinking of installing a ridiculous option that serves more as a conversation piece than anything practical or even, well "sane". Since my enthusiast will have a nice big gaping hole where the navigation system would be..... There is a guy in NYC (where I live) who does really slick modifications on cars for movies/celebrities etc..... this guy can do anything! I was thinking of having a custom built monitor in that space that is hooked up to a rear camera (like some buses have). It will serve as my new rear view mirror, but more importantly it will intrigue anyone that steps in my Z (not that they won't be intrigued already!). Just imagine that screen as I leave everyone in the dust on the open roads- like my own little video game. Ok everyone, don't rip on me too hard, remember... I'm one of you!
Sounds cool, but just get navigation put in, people will think its just as cool, and im sure it will be far more usefull to you.
p.s. Im in new york too, so tell me what you end up doing and how much it costs, maybe ill go in with you for a cheaper price? Maybe just a screen with TV would be mad cool......

There is an option on the japanese site that mounts a camera on the front at each corner, and displays to the nav screen, giving you better vision around corners. Having a rear view might actually be good for us tall people, since it is starting to sould like the rear view doesnt work so well for us.
I tried to ask a couple of questions about a guy who had done this on his ducati. I would be worried about vibration blurring the picture (especially on an lcd, worse on a 2 cyl bike) and with the camera getting washed out and being useless (even more than a mirror) with headlights and sunlight. Also, the video would have to be mirrored, and I don't know how hard/easy that would be. It certainly would be a cool thing to have, but you would have to make sure that the camera is relocatable and that you coudl hook up a recorder to it (for when you take it out to the track

Not a bad idea, but not really new or novel, either. The Infiniti Q45 has had the same backup camera system as an option for some time and plays through the NAV system when you back up so you dont hit stuff you dont see. I wouldnt pay extra to get it put in, though. Its not really worth much.....
thats a sweet idea. In fact, fry's electronics (or maybe anyother large electronics store) has individual screen sizes that sell seperate from a tiny video processor and little cameras. Its designed for minivans to use to watch kids in the van or behind. I'm gonna do it!!
Now this could interest a few people. Needs to have more versatility. How about making it an onboard computer? Here are a few ideas I have to add to the original request, Rear and Side Monitor, Nav, DVD movie, satellite radio, Internet radio, and satellite Internet access. Have the Z's computer (ecu) interface with the system, allowing control over every aspect of the cars engine, ala fine-tuning. Unique software paging system that could basically make the car communicate to the owner via a messaging system (pager/cell/PDA). Inform you of scheduled maintenance, oil changes, etc. Trip measuring software that determines driver trends based on average revs, speed and time. Then use this data to track the cars run time history. Make it a Zuper computer.
Ok, I may have gone a little overboard. But I would buy it…

Hmmm... I wanna try something like this depending on the visibility out the rearview mirror. I know some people that have posted on other threads did not find the rearview mirror view all that great

I'm going to do this, but I'm also throwing in a Playstation 2 in the mix so I can watch DVDs. I already have all the pieces, except fr the screen. I'm using a x10 camera for the rear.
