Default Downshift 5th to 5th By Accident

Man,

I keep downshifting from 5th gear to 4th gear by accident trying to go to 6th gear. Im still in my break-in period and have about 298 mi on it. Will this do some major damage? The rpm level went from 3 to 4k. I breaked a little and shift it back to neutral and then shift it back to 5th. Anyone has done this and will it do some major damage?

No, its when your going from 3rd to 4th racing or driving hard and slam in into 2nd by accident. That hurts, but wont damge untill you do it a lot.

Also when you want to race you have to down shift anyways. This depends on speed and what rpm you want to be in. This doesnt damage anything either, just hard on the tranny.

I wouldn't worry about any damage, just might want to push the shifter to the right a little as your shifting to 6th.

Only time you should worry is when your already at or near redline and you accidentally downshift.

I dunno, I've never missed or accidently shifted. And I was a newbie MT driver till this car. The only thing I've done is gone from 4th into 3rd a couple of times when i'm driving really slowly and I thought I was in 2nd instead of fourth.

You'll be fine unless you are gunning it and forcing the shifter into gear.

Default Yes, you have done major damage…

...sell your Z immediately !

Just kidding

I also had a little trouble getting use to the shift pattern for the first couple hundred miles. I did what you did several times.
350zSpeedRacer is correct, you should only worry if you’re at redline and then downshift.

Don't worry, enjoy your Z.

Peace

Just make sure you're not applying any "down" pressure while you're pushing to the right. That would be bad........very, very bad!

That's no kidding! Will it even go into reverse when you're up to speed to be in 5th??? I know my LS1 had a reverse lockout to make it stupid proof, but I'm sure someone out there could have gotten around it! LOL

won't go in reverse. Gated reverse your car must be at a stop to go into reverse.

kbomb, the plastic smell you are experiencing is totally normal. It is just the newness burning off the engine compartment and will subside over time. I just picked my car up on monday and noticed the same thing. First day was the worst, now I don't really notice it anymore.

Here's a tip for flawless shifting from 5th to 6th. Instead of grabbing the shifter like you normally do, with your palm facing toward you, grab the shift **** from the left, so your palm is facing away from your body. Imagine you're in the water and doing the breast stroke, so your palms are facing away from you and pulling away and to the right. This will enable the shifter to go into 6th just as smoothly and easily as it currently goes into 2nd shifing as you normally would. Due to the placement of 6th, you need to rotate your palm the way I described to facilitate the shift. Otherwise, if you keep the palm facing toward you, as you do now, you'll have the tendency to pull it out of 5th, toward you, and then into 4th, which you have already noticed. Hopefully you can visualize what I am talking about.

I know some LS1 cars will go into reverse when you are driving. There was a guy that I used to hang out with who had a pretty built up TA with all kinds of graphics, a big wing, nitrous, etc. He goes to the track and about 3/4 of the way down you see his reverse lights come on quickly.. luckily he realized it before he lost it. His 1/4 mile time wasn't too impressive though, 16.41@90 - on nitrous!

Just for curiosities sake i would like to see what happens if you shifted into reverse while moving forward at a decent clip. Any volunteers?

heres what would happen. your tranny will be left behind you if you shift into reverse!!!!!

Thats odd your haveing troubles shifting. I thought it was the easiest shifter i ever drove. But i have been driving 5 speeds for 8 years. I do however have a hard time downshifting. This car doesn't like skiping gears like 5th to third. or even 3rd to second.

I hate that. I need instantanious response to the wheels on the highways hear and have to move quick. and sometimes my shifter just won't go into gear. pisses me off. My civic would do it?!?!?!

your fine, i know you spent alot of money on your car but remember, you have a warrenty!

Drive it into the ground for the warrenty life!!!! oH AND REDLINING IS GOOD EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE. IT CLEARS CARBON DEPOSITS...DAMN CAPS LOCK!!!

One way to get used to the shifter is to practice going through all of them at a stop light. Don't do the reverse, though, or you could give somebody behind you a heart attack.
