Default Shifting into 5th/6th

While test driving a 2003 Enthusiast 350Z, I remember a somewhat awkward shift from 4th to 5th, and then from 5th to 6th. This was because I could not simply push the stick all the way right until it stopped, and then up into 5th. Instead, I would push it all the way right, and it would sort of sit in a notch that wouldn't let it slide directly up into 5th. I had to move it very slightly left, off of the right wall and then upwards into 5th. It made shifting seem sort of odd, as I was "aiming" for 5th gear rather than moving the shifter right, and then up. I know this may sound confusing, so hopefully I described it well enough. Please let me know if anyone else has experience this.

Probably just a little tricky for you at first.

I hope so, I guess it's just different than most so I was worried. Seems odd to not be able to just go "up into neutral from 4th, all the way right against the wall, and then up into 5th". It's definitely going to take me some time to aim for 5th gear.

Does sound awkward. Assume that you are shopping for a 350Z? Why not pass on this one.

Well I already bought the car, it was sort of a deal I couldn't pass up on. The car does have a bumper-to-bumper warranty for the next 3 years and 36,000 miles that covers everything except routine maintenance with a $0 deductible, so it's all essentially free work. What do you think would be the cause of this weird shift movement? I like to have some idea of what I'm talking about before I bring it up to a mechanic.

Oh. 350Z shifting is finicky. Its temperamental. You live in Valley Forge, PA? Home of ECZA. Go to a ECZA meet. Ask an experienced 350Z driver to drive your car.

^ Truth. There is an ECZA meet in Wilmington, DE on April 19th (see link below). I'm not sure yet whether I am going, but I'm sure if it is nice weather there will be a large turnout as usual. Mostly 300zx's, but a good number of 350z's too. We'll set you straight

Uh thanks for your concern with my operating procedures but this isn't my first manual car, and I have an R6 too... so I would say I'm pretty competent with manual transmissions.

Just hinting at the fact that I know how manual transmissions work, and thus how to operate them. That's all.

Sometimes you need to be a bit deliberate when going into 5th. Pushing to right fully then up should go in. If you are being firm and it still doesn't go in that way, someone should look at it.

Hope this helps.

the only times i have problems shifting was from 1st to 2nd. never had any problems going into 5th or 6th. the Z was also not my first manual car, but it does take bit more skills to drive than say Honda's MT's.

Amazing all these replies and not one person can tell the OP that there is an adjustable guide plate that may be the culprit.

OP,
It's possible the one you are looking at just needs to be adjusted. See attached for the procedure to set it so that it will help guide the shift lever into 5th and 6th gear.

If you have all this experience, you must know that all cars are different then. And like anything it takes time to get the feel. Just cause mechanicaly they function the same, doesn't mean they are going to perform the same.

YOU started this thread, YOU deal with the responses.

Amazing only in that I have never heard of anyone having his particular problem.just plenty of threads on grinding, etc. That adjustment sure looks like it could lead to some major shift trouble if not done correctly - I would not do it myself, thats for sure.

It could also be your xmsn sincro's are going bad, when mine started to go out it would stop me from going into 6th and then fifth and then it would grind while engaging into 6th and then 5th grinded shortly after. It is just a possibility I would say since it is under warranty, go to a dealer and take a tech for a ride in it to show them what it is doing and if it is bad they will replace it no ?'s asked. Good luck man
