New personal record - max distance on tank of gas
Hoo boys,
I pushed the ragged edge of the envelope tonight... This is the furthest I've gone on a tank of gas in any car I've ever owned (including my first car, a 1995 Mazda Protege LX).
And the number was....
637.4 km
dte still said 43 km when I chickened out and decided to fill up.

396 miles.
Why doesn't the rest of the world catch up to us Americans and use a the standard measuring system. I need to see a number and know how far it is w/o having to convert it.

I think you can push it a bit further
I've gone 410 miles on 16.7 Gallons, and we supposedly have a 20 gallon tank. I usually drive the last 40 miles with the warning light.
Theoretically, I should be able to get 497 miles, but I'm already nervous going over 400 even though I don't think I've ever put more than 17 gallons in the tank.
Hey, do other parts of the world call it "gas mileage" or do they call it "gas kilometerage" or something else?

I think it's "fuel economy".
And I believe the common unit of fuel economy in metric is km per 100 liters. (Or something like that.) I'm sure there are some foreign folks around here that can clue us dimwitted users of Stupid Units to the proper ways of measurement.

It is best to avoid 'draining' the gas tank. Particuarly on older cars filaments can be sucked into fuel lines/rails.
Gasoline weighs 8.5 lbs/gal so you could have a 44.5 lb lighter car if you were to fill to 15 gal instead of a full tank. Which in turn uses less to get more and mileage increases.

Are you sure about that weight? I thought gasoline was lighter... under 7 pounds. A quick search on Google turn up this:

When I drove my Z down to Hilton Head this summer I was averaging 350 miles on a tank with over 1/4 of a tank left. I would have easily been able to get 450 if everyone wouldn't have had to stop, my DTE meter would read well over 500 every time I filled it up. The Z gets great mileage on the highway, I was getting 29.5 mpg at 75 mph and 32 mpg at 55 mph.

I actually get the DTE to read 0 when I'm low on gas, but only temporarily.
My commute to work involves getting onto a highway via a constant radius on-ramp. Being in the Z, I can never resists taking the ramp (curve) as fast as I dare, then floor it to merge.
If I'm low on gas (below a 1/4 tank) the following usually happens. After driving for about 2 or 3 minutes, the gas needle will start going down. Then the low gas light will come on and the DTE will start flashing with a very low number (below 10, and occasionally 0).
As I keep driving, the DTE will gradually increase by 5 or 10 km at a time until it gets to above 70, at which point the gas light will go off and I'm fine for another day.
Of course, the first time this happened to me the DTE was flashing the big 0 at me, just after my getting on the highway. I was sweating bullets.

Took this pic driving the car back to Texas from the purchase in New Hampshire....
hard to see in pic as my viewin angle holding the camera was a lil different than the sterring wheel cropped view from the camera itself......but it was 474.3 miles on the tank and the guage was reading 34 miles distance to empty. This was in Pensylvania.
Pulled over to take another picture at 1200 miles when my break in was finished and I could finally take it over 4000 RPM and guess what the signs reads on the side of the road "Plateau Rd"

not sure about the Z, but often the fuel pumps are actually cooled by the fuel, they sit in the tank. by letting the tank run close to dry they can cool properly and you also run the risk of sucking up anything that might have been floating in the gas such as water...

I think water is heavier than gas, but point taken. You run the risk of sucking up the dregs of the tank when you run to empty.
But for me, part of the fun is running those last 50 miles with the little light on.
