IDK about all you guys who are chiming in about 1st gear being lame, but my 350 gets it in first.

How about running 0-60 feet in less than 2.0 seconds. Then come back and share your feelings.

unless you launch at 4.5k rpm it will feel slow until you get to around 5k rpm. It seems like its a kind of all or nothing deal. You either go ***** out and hop/skip around, or wait until your in the power band.

I'm glad someone else started this thread. I've been feeling the same way since March 2006. I really have to rev the thing up to keep up with minivans when the light turns green. If I drive 'normal' (should I say, civil?) the minivan pulls ahead every time. But when I get into 2nd gear and apply the same pressure to the accelerator the Z pulls ahead every time. Oh well...I think it's really meant to make good power at higher speeds, not for drag racing.

LOL yeah, I feel like a retard with my car looking the way it does and minivans getting so far ahead of me when the light turns green. I used to think it was only me with this problem. But I guess i'll feel even stupider if i race from traffic light to traffic light.

I knew I wasn't the only one who felt this way. I just wasn't very good at explaining it.

Make sure your TCS or VDC is off...
Accelerate slowly in first gear till your at 4500 RPM's, then mash the gas... See how that feels.

That's funny you say that. Watch the tach in this 1st gear clip I had posted.

I drove a 156whp civic for 8 years, great car but my bone stock 350z feels like a MONSTER in first gear. and second, third, etc etc.

I wouldn't let it bother me too much.

I can only get up to about 32 in first gear... Is that normal?

I used to get pissed about the whole idea of being passed by bumbling minivans at stoplights while driving normally, etc. but I've also had the pleasure of going through a number of very cheap rental vehicles- among this fleet was a Kia Sportage, a minivan (forget the brand), a G6, etc. I realized that most of these cars are built for driving light to light at <40mph speeds and they seem to move very well from the stop light up until about 40 where they fall flat on their face. I think there is also the mentality that some feel they have to give it their all at a stop light when sitting next to a Z so they don't feel as badly about their car but I could be wrong. Either way, I hear what you say about first gear which is why I waste next to no time in it and move as quick as possible to second

i think i know what you mean. Personally, i can make 1st gear really go IF I WANT TO. the thing is, it really seems like i am doing extra much doing that at a stoplight (noise it produces n all). The pedal is very sensative for first, and the car is using a lot more power to get it moving. But yea, sometimes i just want to go after a stoplight normally, but i would look like a slow fool unless i do a quick switch to second, or make a bit of uncessary noise. Dont get me wrong, not saying i dont like exhaust, i freakin love it. But there are times for it and times to keep it cool... there is hardly a middle point sadly.

And also, from MANY 350z races i have seen, 350z's tend to be behind in first, and start pulling forward starting in 2nd and going to 3rd. I gaurentee you, almost all of them end up pulling towards then end where the power kicks in (unless it is outclassed)

Don't forget Minivans and other auto cars leave stop lights preloaded. So unless you preload your 6spd you're not going to catch them mama's off the line.

Eh, who cares if those soccer moms are passing you on the road in first gear. If you really want to, rev it up to about 3k and launch in first. Then you will see that its not so slow. I know I've spun through all first 3 gears one time when launching in the same spot. That is one powerful first gear granted second may feel more powerful. I guarantee that soccer mom will not get ahead of you when you're revving and launching at about 3k. But then again, why are you trying to get ahead of the soccer mom in first gear. Drive it normal and I'm sure once you get up in 2nd and 3rd gradually, you will still be up ahead even if she starts quick off the line. Another thing is, sound deadening material doesn't make the car feel as fast unless you're really ripping it since you don't hear all the road noise inside the cabin. The quietness inside the car can give that illusion.

If 1st really bothers you that much the Zed has enough torque to comfortably pull away in second.
