Horsepower Question
Wondering about the horsepower numbers of 287 as listed in specs. Are they at the wheel or crank? Not sure if anyone else has asked but being a nOOb...please be gentle
I came from the 1.8t dub side. Everyone talks about whp there and it seems to be a big topic/argument on wheel or crank numbers that people post after dyno runs.
TIA

Yes, it is crank horsepower. The numbers that manufacturers list generally are at the crank. Dyno numbers are horsepower to the wheels. The Z is rated at 287 HP, with the average to the wheels being around 235 give or take 10 HP. The variation is due to a particularly strong (or weak) engine and variation among dynos. The drivetrain loss is 15% - 20%, a little more maybe for the automatics.

yes to dyno at the crank the engine has gonna come out, so you can go back to the VW forum and tell anyone claiming to have crank hp dynos they are full of sh*t. they are unheard of more or less, even if you had the engine out of the car for some reason most places dont have a dyno capable of measuring it simply cause its more common to do it with the engine in.
only the manufactor has access to lots of uninstalled engines.
