about to buy a z, tell me what goes wrong
ive been in to vdubs for the past few years and i'm getting tired of pulling out my hair and spending all my money on fixing every damn thing on it. i'm about to go buy a z but i'd like to know a bit more about it before i get one. i'm very mechanical thanks to my vw's problems and can do motor swaps/clutches ect. just about anything. anyway what tends to go bad on z's? my friend told me mostly clutches, fluids, and batteries ha ha. never any crazy electrical problems or the car just not starting one day for no reason? is this an easy car to work on or is the engine bay super cramped? i'm looking at an 07+ z because of the bump in power, but why is there a bump in power? can i add the difference to an 04 Z from an 07 Z and get the same results? i'm really leaning towards an 07+Z as the internals are stronger and it has the dual-path intake system which is probably what gives it power including the bump in compression. so in the long run this would be a better motor to boost with a head spacer(right?). how much boost can stock vq internals take? my vr6 in my jetta could handle 500 whp on its block, hopefully the vq can match it if not better. convince me to buy a z!

The RSX is reliable and thats about it. I personally dont understand people buying cars like the rsx and civic si for the speed. These cars are not powerful at all unless you mod 90% of it... Plus this guy is looking to turbo a z, how would an RSX fit into his "performance" category

searching through the newb FAQ's and the rest of the forum like any other person should do before posting a new thread, should answer any and all questions about general reliability and technical knowledge
theres also the VQ engine wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_VQ_engine#VQ35HR
and since your're in SD if you see another Z guy waiving at you, you better god dam wave back hahah

Are you serious about the performance on the RSX? I drove a type s a gew times and owned a TSX for a few years and just bought a 35th anni. Z and i can tell you rsx was trash compared to the both of them. The Tsx had some power and a really beatiful interior. The z is just alot more powerful and is really good looking all around.

i was gonna say why would i buy an rsx type s that is about as fast as my stock vr6. ive owned a few vr6's and my vr6 with just intake, exhaust, suspension, light weight flywheel+pulleys and cams will hang with a g35 coupe. not bad for an old car in my opinion but it just breaks so much, in the past month alone ive done a wheel bearing, thermostat + thermostat housing, coolant pipe(still leaking wtf!!?) and an oil pan gasket. i just want a fun little car that i wont have to do these things every single year. how much are oem parts usually. Ive also had vr6's boosting 18 PSI, how do you expect me to want to buy an rsx, im trying to get away from FWD, its a major crutch. no traction till halfway through third gear

Difference between the 03-06 and 07-08 is essentially an all new motor. The VQ35HR makes more power because it is 80-85% different than the VQ35DE. So no, you can't do any simple swaps and make up the difference in an older 350Z.

As much as I hate to say it, and as ugly as it is, the Civic Si does a very good job in the speed department. Full bolt-on Civic Si pulls very similarly to an 03-05 Z and can keep up with the HR's. It hurts my f**king head just thinking about it, but it's true.... jeezus I think I just cried a little.

Straight to the point: Three minor nuisances, 1. Gas latch release issue; 2. hatch door strut(s) issue; 3. power window motors issue. None of these will leave you stranded, so GO FOR IT, dude!

is there a certain section on the site that just has people asking about how to fix certain problems with the car? theres so many damn pull down tabs on the menu its hard to find stuff. this forum is completely different from the vw forum, as soon as you go in to that one everyones titles say help car wont start or help wont go in to gear or help clanking noise coming from my motor lol

I don't get it but why don't you get the Vette like you posted in another thread.......
"dude, get a c6 corvette. i drove one the other day and wow, you're not getting power like that in a z without FI. you can pick up a used grandma driven one with like 30,000ish miles on it for about 25k or less. plus the aftermarket and power gains from a chevy LS motor are far superior to just about any other motor out there. full exhaust on an ls motor is like a 60hp upgrade! like WTF?!"

THIS THREAD! LOL!
Just messing around but seriously, All the questions AND MORE, can be found on this forum by doing a little searching first. We dont hate posts, its just that these questions have been asked, answered and debated in detail for years now. So cluttering up the site with reposts and duplicated questions can get a little annoying. Nothing personal, just a heads up...and by the way, the stock block on the VQ is Aluminum not Iron, so it can handle some serious horsepower but Im not sure about 600. You should get pretty close though.
