Default Transmission code

By having access to the vehicle and VIN #, how can I tell which transmission code it has, to tell if it's been replaced(I've heard the CD009 is the first one to have the grinding problem resolved?)I am looking into 03's and 04's and have heard much about the grinding. Although I will be looking for 04.5's, i'd like to see how to tell if the trans has been replaced on it, assuming it doesn't say on the Carfax or I don't have access to it's Carfax.

Thank you.

You can't from the VIN. Not sure if a dealer can look it up in their system or not.

You have to look at the transmission to tell which one is installed. I have a 2004.5 and it has a CD009 so I'd guess that is the point where they started using that version.

There's no way I could check the transmission, is there?
