I like both cars - considered buying an e46 M3 back when I purchased my 350Z, but they were still in the low 20's at that point for an '02 or '03. I would be really torn as to what to do. In your situation, I'd probably make the trade.

Have you driven both cars? They are different. Forgetting about $ costs of maintenance (which i think has been exagerrated a bit here) the two cars are different, although I see your dillemma, as I have owned both as well. BMW - motor is smoother, feels like it pulls better, feels more "flexible". But the E46 chassis is a bigger car (I like E36 btr). I prefer the Z chassis cause it feels like a true (or true-er) sports car. I beg to differ on the handling. I had my Z on the track many times this past yr (actually my old Z) and drove numerous students E46 m3, and I tell you the Z is an excellent track platform. I would give the Z the nod in handling. E46's push a bit, and its not easy to get rid of necessarily. Both cars supremely stable at high speed. IF you like the feel of a sportscar (911, vette, Z, etc) then stay with your low mileage car. IF you want a back seat and have nvr owned german engineering and want to give it a try, the M3 is a great choice. My vote? Keep that Z. I like mine btr than my E46 (and even btr than my old 2002 911 996 too!!)
