Default Tachometer needle bounces why?

I searched around and some said it was normal and some said not.

The needle will bounce back and forth between 250-500 rpms depending on what you do.

Either by hitting the gas real fast, rough road, or shifting hard, or letting the clutch out faster causing car to jerk.

I'm sure nothing bad just want to know if it's normal, or easy fix or why it's like this.

Thanks!

You are aware that the tachometer is reflecting engine speed, correct? And you are aware that if you hit the gas the engine speed will increase, correct? It is pretty much impossible to get the engine speed to 250 without stalling out. And if letting the clutch out makes your car jerk, you need some training on driving a MT. I'm having a very difficult time understanding your "problem". So I have to ask - how old are you?

Letting clutch out too fast or too slow will cause a mismatch between engine and transmission speed. That's when the needle and car will jerk. Practice more on timing it.

I think he means anywhere in the rev band where he does those things it would jump 250-500...

example he would be driving at let say 3000 rpm and he would shift and the tach would bounce down as opposed to smoothly going down.

It's normal.

You're walking along maintaining the same speed, then somebody throws 70lbs on your shoulders... you're going to slow down regardless trying to handle this new load that has suddenly come upon you. Without getting technical, your engine is basically doing the same thing.

You will notice your idle will bounce around a bit when sitting at a light or in traffic too, this is normal of our cars.

Replace your headlight fluid, that should fix it.

My tach bounces around 250 right before my car stalls out as the apartment complex manager gives me the stink eye for going over the 5mph limit.

My suggestion: Give it the beans!

i think what he meant to say was it fluctuates 250-500 rpm over idle or where ever it may be

If he's trying to explain what I think he is, then, say if you shift from 3rd to 4th smoothly, the tach still bounces up and down a few times before settling to whatever revs even though, from the sound of it at least, the engine revs are not doing the same thing. I'm assuming the tach mechanism is spring loaded and it simply bounces a little. Hardly anything to be worried about.

Davy.

even with all of you chiming in i still dont know what the h*ll is going on??? Im afraid to drive my car now. There's apparently a new problem with our rpm's? should i only give it between 250-500 rpm worth of gas in any given gear to change gears? or to get started? how about down shifting? usually i have to give it more than that to down shift, though not always accurate I might give it to much or to less... And what about the guys with automatics? Should they worry? They only have 5 speed autos, oh and an overdrive? Everyone just walk away from your cars now and nothing bad will happen until this matter is resolved.
