I second that! All we need are a bunch on cell-phone-talking, makeup-fixing, newpaper-reading half-wits going 120 miles per hour in ther SUVs and minivans while paying no attention to the drivers in the other lanes. I am 100% against it.

Same here, dead people everywhere with no speed limit. Think of your insurance costs.

No speed limit in MN.

edit: let me correct that. It's either in MI or MN. And only certain parts of isolated areas.

No speed limit in MN or MI
DO you know for a fact or you heard this from your cousin's girlfriend's little dog?

By the way, what does this have to do with the original posting?

Sorry, guys. I wouldn't want an Autobahn in the US. Too many stupid drivers on the road, not to mention that petition mentioned breathalizer tests at every toll booth. That's a little to "big brother" for me.

was on one of the car magazines. Plus it had a picture of a sheriff standing next to a speed sign that said no speed limit but drive sensibily. Night time speed limit was 65.

It had to do with original post because there's already a road with unlimited speed limit. Just that it's not in a convinent location.

I don't think it would be a bad idea but there would have to be some kind of rules for the road that would be strictly enforced. Things like only being in the far left lane if you are really moving, and possibly only allowing certain types of cars on the road such as no trucks, SUVs, etc, but I'm sure that would never fly.

Personally, I don't find it a big deal to be home in 30 min vs 25 min.

I prefer a solution in getting rid of some of the gridlock. (i.e. streamlined on/off ramps, more lanes, etc)

Just to let you know in Germany you are required to have 22hrs of professional driving instruction with strict mandates regarding hwy, night and poor weather driving. You must have at least 4hrs of classroom time. You must attend 2, full day, car control clinics. You must take your road test in a manual car. The tests are three times as long and easily twice as hard. Most people drive for a year or more before trying to take their test, and if they pass they then have the joy of running a granduated licensing program that takes even more years. Oh and all of this is of course at your own expense.

If you brought that in, then I'd sign the petition. BTW the German Autobhans have some of the highest fatality rates, most due to "too fast for conditions". Also over there people actually take resposibility for their actions and the suffer the consequences. It wouldn't take long for someone over here to sue the state because stupid little Jimmy couldn't judge at 30mph corner and took it at 110mph. Probably because he split his coffee on his lap and the cup never said the contents would be hot!

The Autobahn works in Germany because strict lane rules have been known and enforced since its creation. Germans are used to driving properly and in the correct lanes and Americans are sloppy and careless on the highways. In Germany, you'd better not be driving slow in the left-hand lane...

Yea, I don't think autoban will work here. There is no culture of safe driving or respect for other drivers in states. I go to Germany once in a while, works for me .

Funny story happened to my friend's coworker. He was stopped for speeding here (he lives in Israel, but was here on the contract). When the cop asked him why he was speeding he pulled out his rental contract and showed the cop the line where it says that he got "unlimited milage" .

I forgot to mention the quality of the roads. Our highways would NEVER sustain cars at the speeds that the Autobahn does. Even the building materials and thicknesses are so much better with the Autobahn. People would kill themselves here...

the truth is..hes right...i thought about it once(doesnt take that much thinking..but you know)....its only a matter of minutes...truthfully, an autobahn in america would only make sense in very scarcely populated places...and since they already have that...then i guess thats all we are getting

i mean..i love to drive fast....but your thinking with your feet not your head

(damn..im sucha dork..cant believe i said that...but its the truth)

Uhh...I'll have to say, quite frankly, you are certainly wrong. My family owns a house in MN and a house in MI and I can assure you that there are speed limits on all roads in both states. And yes, I have been to the most remote parts of both states.

I believe the state you are thinking of is Montana. I believe that it used to be the case that Montana didn't have speed limits. Now they do. I-90 (or is it 94) through Montana has an 85 MPH limit, with trucks and nighttime limit of 65MPH (at least it was a couple years ago).

There are parts in MI and MN (and SD,ND as well) where you can drive as fast as you want but it is illegal as there is a basic speed limit for all road types.

As for autobahn in US...awful idea. American's can't drive. If we wanted the autobahn we'd have to raise the driving age to 18 (minimum) and spend all the hours everyone else everywhere else in the world does in drivers training.

What is with people trying to prove me wrong? I didn't say definitively that it was MN MI or other states. This isn't something on my mind constantly.

I went to look it up and turns out it was Montana and they ended that practice in 1999

If you want to go fast in your car, GO TO A TRACK. An American Autobahn would be a terrible idea.
