This has been posted before ... why the 'used' notion though? These were new car dealerships?

Yeah, I knew a lot fo this, but it's definitely the best article I've seen for knowing what's going on.

If you take the time to read a book on all aspects of a car deal, and how to get a lower price, that two hours + 12.95 for the book can save you a couple of grand.

Absolutely ... the article is definitely worth the read ... I found it interesting that although there might be a $5000 difference in what you want vs what they want, they'll budge maybe $150-200 at a time ...

... my response would be to either leave them my number and walk out, or, if I'm really bored and have nothing to do the rest of the day, budge $5-10 at a time.

Pretty depressing. The sales staff is only as good as the management. If I have a choice, I will buy online rather than go through such crap. If I decided to switch to another brand of car, this is what I would be faced with in another dealership. I have dealt with the same dealer for Nissans and Oldsmobiles(way back) since 1970, and once a son-in-law turned the dealership into one as described by the first job the guy had, he ended up cheating and stealing money from sales and service.

He lasted 2 years before the franchise was revoked and he was run out of town on a rail. It was said he couldn't find a job anywhere in the State. I went back when 1/2 the staff, managers, sales and technicians were fired. An excellent article, it has an insight most car buyers never get.

A recent example of online buying, a dealership I visited recently offered me $1000 off any one of the car model I was looking at that was in inventory. I e-mailed him back, said I wasn't ready to buy, I'm not, but will be happy to receive other offers in the future. I also know whats in all the dealers inventory of that model in Texas and Oklahoma. There are plenty of that model not far away.

Oh, an interesting thing the salesman gave me before I left, his copy of the training seminar he attended for the new model. It contains a buyers profile to market to along with their ages, salaries, marital status, and other tidbits of knowledge. It fit me to a tee, except I'm 20-25 years older than their profile. You should have seen them slobber over the Z. The salesman was very smart to give me that document after a test drive, the car sells itself in a comparsion of the competition, according to the features. New info, new tactics are evolving all the time in the car biz.

Actually, the salesman was loaded with info and reasonably respectable. I told him I liked the car, I did, and said I probably will buy in 2-3 months. I wasn't lying to him, just didn't know for sure. I'll have to see what other expenses are and act accordingly.

I don't see why not, an online dealer should have the resources to appraise your car locally or nearby, if you don't live in an isolated area. They could contact a reputable appraisal firm or another dealer w/o what you want or not willing to meet your bottom line. This would cut their fee some, but profit keeps them in business, however large or small.
