When should I do the first oil change?
damn, i was real lazy/couldn't find the time, i got it at like 4000
...i didn't know it was supposed to be at 500 miles
p.s. what are the benefits of synthetic oil? what does it do? i know your not supposed to go back to regular oil after you've switched to synthetic, but what would happen if you did?

I havent double checked, but I remember nothing in any manual anywhere saying 500miles. in fact some manufacturers claim the oil in the car will promote proper breakin and under no circumstances should the original oil be replaced prior to the 1200mile break in, or 3000 for that matter.
I personally dont buy into all that about it being special oil, and itd be easy to put to rest if anyone know what oil exactly went into the cars at the factory. but either way, 500 or 3000 I dont THINK it matters. no proof anyway, same as the breakin procedure. 4000 prolly not great, but I doubt you did any noticable damage.

I did my first oil change at 1100 miles, the second at 2500, and the third at 5500. Will be avery 3K from now on. Oil changes IMO, are like sex, you can never do it enough.

Every reputable engine builder I have ever known has recommended to change the oil at 500 miles. The reason is that the most engine wear occurs during this period. This leaves a bunch of metallic particles in the oil which get picked up by the oil filter. Oil filters can only collect so much garbage before they plug up and when they do, the bypass valve opens. This bypasses the oil filter entirely and circulates unfiltered oil through the engine! Bad. Very bad. Seeing that the engine is the single most expensive part in any car, I think it's just dumb to not change your oil frequently (or at least the filter).
Nissan officially recommends the first oil change at 3600 miles. They are full of $hit. I question their judgement on this, but then again they are in the business of selling new cars...they figure a 350Z with 50k on it is old and it's time for you to buy a new one.
Synthetic oils are the bomb. It's the only thing I trust for use in my sportbike, and that engine sees RPMs that no VQ35 will ever see. I'm an Amsoil fan, but I've had good luck with Mobil1 too. The nice thing about synthetics is that they don't break down in the presence of moisture or gasoline. They are also thinner in viscosity (equals more power) but protect better than regular oil. They also don't contain waxes, tars, and all that other garbage which tends to be left behind in the engine (I've rebuilt many engines that have had more wax deposits than a bee hive). The prices are higher, but I've gotten 17,000 miles between oil changes on my Cavalier before too! I have my oil regularly tested by a lab associated with Amsoil...they can tell me exactly what's in my oil and when I need to change it. When my service contract is up on the Z in June, she will be going to Amsoil too.

ive learned with my honda S2000 in the past that you are not suppose to change the oil until at least 3500 miles. they told me that the oil had a certain chemical in it that was to help brake the motor in. i figure if honda does that in all there cars including the S2000 and NSX that other car manufacturers would follow suit.
Sure enough, the Z, recommended first oil change is between 3000-4000 miles depending on how you drive the car. i have 1500 now and am waiting till 3500 to change the oil. Since its my daily driver, ill be filling her up with a full synthetic blend, Royal Purple 20w-50 or 10w-30. Tranny fluid is going too, not sure on the brand yet. the Brake fluid will be replaced with Super Blue Racing fluid as well.
