Well fck. I was aiming for fourth gear and hit second gear. Took the car out of gear pretty quick but damn. Car ran alright afterwards, I took it back up to speed and it did so fine. Turned it off and started it back up, no problem. Listened under the hood at idele for any weird noises and could not hear any. Would any possible damage be evedent right away? Or am I most likly fcked and screwed something up?
You just really huurt your pistons, and more specifically o-rings.
Everytime you downshift, it strains the o-rings, which is why driving a car 'nicely' and not downshifting 3 gears on a whim will generally increase the longevity of the car. What you did was probably equivalent to 40-60 regular downshifts.
I did this in my friends s2k because i wasn't used to a decent non clunky-*** shifter, and threw it from 6th to 2nd going 55mph. It still runs fine a year later.
btw i'm no s2k fanboy, that was the lamest car in the world to drive.

I am not going to worry too much. Whats done is done. I guess my main deal is if something is fcked will I mess it up more by driving the car? Like I said though seems fine... For now.
Yeah, don't worry about it. I had my '08 Z for a little over a year and was my first manual car. I remember going to 4th instead of 6th while cruising on the freeway. I was soooooo scared. hahaha.

I wouldnt be too concerned with it, just pay attention!! I did this once merging into traffic- i was leaning forward to check the blindspot and the odd angle goin from 3rd to 4th leaning forward was enuff to downshift instead of up to forth! Luckily for me all it did was make merging more exciting!!!! but surprising to say the least!
How fast were you going?
How fast were you going?
Did you actually let the clutch out before realizing you had it in the wrong gear?
I've missed a gear a couple times over many years of driving MTs, but I could always tell from the feel of the shifter and the sound the gears made that it was not going where it was supposed to be.
The difference in the ratios from 6th to 2nd is such that the engine would rev to about three times whatever it was turning when you had it in 6th. Unless you were going over 70, there's little chance of hurting anything.
I have a hard time imagining a driving situation on a public road where I'd need (or even want) to downshift a Z going that fast. I took a friend for a ride yesterday. He said my Z was the quickest car he'd ever ridden in. The engine was never over 2500 rpms while he was in the car.

I drop from 4th to 2nd all the time when Im racing people. It's a strong engine you wont hurt a thing. I just hoped you didnt dump that clutch too fast cause it wll hurt a stock clutch with no rev matching. BTW everyone needs to drive a 370z. i drove one for the first time a month ago and that rev-match clutch thing is the jam. Im so used to rev matching that I accidently did it a few times in the 370 and all I did was redline the hell out of it. The new rev-match clutch is superb all you have to do is shift and drop the clutch and revs shoot up instantaneously and ohhhh soo smoooth. OHH YEAAA (kool-aid man voice)
Remember that in 1st gear, you can probably run 30-35 MPH at redline. If you're going 60mph and accidently downshift into first, the engine will need to turn 2X redline at that speed. That is where a bad downshift will hurt you.

The rev-limiter keeps the engine from overreving under power, it can't prevent the drivetrain from trying to turn the engine faster than it was designed for.
