It might be a little early, but I am paranoid about hail. DFW is notorious for getting alot of hail...especially around where I work.
Query: Will a car cover protect my car while at work from hail at all? I am thinking probably not...too thin, but do they make a thick car cover or padded cover or anything!?!?

There are some thick covers that I think would help.
On my old camaro I had a "Technolon" cover. (not sure if that is the brand of cover, or the type of material, but it was think and padded. I would guess it was 1/8 inch thick or more.
It was so well padded that I am sure it protected my can against door dings. It probably wouldn't stop damage from a 1 pound hailstone, but it would certainly help with more "norma' sized hail
If you shop for a cover that helps prevent door dings you will find the thickest covers.
I definetely believe that the thicker covers would help i hail.

yeah its going to suck if hail comes down while we are at work.. wide open parking lot with virtually nothing to park under
lets keep this thread going and get some good ideas because I will be pissed if my car get hail damage
on a side note hail doesnt necessarily come down here in the winter.. the last big hail storm was in april

If you live in a hail prone area and there is no cover at work it would be hard to do better than a thick/padded car cover. You could keep it in the trunk, or stash it in a box under your desk.

if nothing else... you could purchase a large amount of padding cloth from a fabric store, sow it together, double or triple layer it if needed till its thick enough for your liking, and then just throw it over your car, followd by a water proof cover.
or you can make a loose fitting cover(drape it flat over the top, then cut a peice for the sides and contour it so it boxes the car. and of course in this method along with the padding youd need a waterproof fabric on top. its alot of sewing, good amount of work; and it wont fit real snug, but thats better IMO, looser it is the more it can give; dont want it clinging to the car or nothing, that wont protect anyway. most car covers operate to lock down onto your car so people cant key it or anything, but thats not what your going for...

This is what we did when we lived in a area that was prone to hail - I bought a std car cover and took it to a sewing shop that made tarps etc and got them to sew in thick padding on the top surfaces - will protect all but the worst hail.
I should mention it makes a hell of a good cover - great insulation for heat and cold.

I used to live in Wichita Falls, I always dreaded my wife's car getting hailed on at work. So I know what the storms are like.
My suggestion would be to have a plan on incoming storms. Find out the nearest cover, and make some lame a$$ excuse right before it is about too storm, and if it looks bad enough go for cover.
My .02
Your luck, you would get it under cover, only too have a tornado carry your car away.
Sorry didnt mean to say that, lets all knock on wood people!

You think hail is bad for your Z's at 0-130mph?...

Hows hail at 400+mph for your paint! I wonder if the 3m clear bra would have helped... hehe
