Default Question about speeding..

A while back I posted about getting a ticket for going 50 in a 35 with my Z. Since the ticket was BS, he pulled me over strickly for the sight of the car and refused to show radar, I went to court. After 3 different days in court, the Officer lied his *** off, and in the end, the judge only gave me a $25 fine and court costs with no points on the record. Now, I specifically asked him and the clerk, if this would go on my record and if the insurance would get ahold of it. They both told me no, since he gave me no points, it does not go on my driving record and insurance doesnt know. Well 7 months later, my insurance renews, goes up $500 and the ticket is on there. Some friends tell me that a judge cant issue no points and that it goes on your record automatically if guilty. Yet I hear all he time about people getting no points, and I asked during court. Anyone know the exact facts on this? I live in Ohio by the way if it helps. I cant get ahold of the MVR today because it's one of the 300 holidays a year the government gets off. Thanks

It is a shame that our government takes a day off to honor those that have sacrificed for the very freedom that allows you to go to court to petition your case. Try moving to another country where your right foot might be cut off to prevent you from going too hard on the skinny pedal.

Did the car have a camera in it? I think most squad cars have cameras now that record everything, including your speed. You should see. However, it being 7+ months later it might be gone.

As for the ticket...aren't there tickets that don't have points with them? I don't know how points work because I've never lived in a state with them (at least that I know of). It could be that since you got a ticket your ins. co. doesn't care if it had points or not...you still broke the law and that's all they care about (remember...most ins. co. are national/international so they don't care about local laws re. points, &c)

Did the court resolve everything before the renewal letter was sent out?

The "state" and the "insurance industry" assign different point values for offenses.

For instance, I received a "no proof of insurance" ticket, which per the state of Michigan is no points, and must be corrected and signed off within 10 days. I had insurance, just not on me. No big deal. Well, the insurance industry values that as a 1 point, or 2 point offense.

This was years ago, but the principle remains the same. The insurance industry assigns points on what they feel is representative of the offense.

Note - By assigning you points, you are marked as a higher risk driver, thus increasing your premium and generating more cash flow.

dunno about cleveland, but austin just went to the points system. i know that you can get points taken off for being a "repeat offender"
so a ticket, be it big or small, can affect you more if you have a previous record for speeding.
maybe something like this was happening? if you had a few previous tickets, then they reported you went to court for this one, you don't get docked for the actual ticket but you do get docked for the "repeat offence" of getting pulled over...

just a theory. i'd have to look up yalls laws to know for sure.

good luck with everything!

Points only matter for your license not for your insurance. The judge may have done away with the points and the big fine, but still convicted you of speeding with no penalty to your license. Your license isn't penalized but you were still convicted of speeding.

Agreed.

I love it when someone gets pulled over and blames it on "my car looking so hot and the cop was out to get me". Don't get me wrong, I love my Z just like everyone else here does, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. It's a 30K Nissan, not a Ferrari. And it's certainly not enough to provoke a cop's jealousy or spite to pull an innocent person doing nothing over. Drive safe, drive smart, and there won't be any problems.

albeit it is still a sports car. mustangs are considered sports cars rightfully so. price doesnt matter, the car was made to go fast quick. cops especially have an eye out for ricers, and alot of their cars are sub 20000. price doesnt matter. if a guy is driving a ferrari, hes gonna have a lawyer to get him outta whatever trouble he gets in anyway so it doesnt matter to much. i bet the kid in a used purple civic hatchback he got for 5000 got pulled over cause his car is "slammed"

I was stopped by a cop who was going the other way and did a U-turn to follow me. I slowed down when I saw him so I was never over the limit when he was behind me. He told me I was going 50. My question is, can radar or laser work in a moving cop car that is moving, and going in the opposite direction or was he just "estimating." This might determine whether I fight this ticket or not.

Sad thing was, this was in a 2001 Accord Sedan, not a Z!

Yes, there are types of radar and laser guns that can pace you while you're both moving. This is true for you both travelling the same direction and for opposite directions.
