Oh....I just bought my 17 yo son an '07 350z touring.

I didn't drive all those crappy cars so I could make my son have to drive them too. I'd rather he study his *** off in school, get A's and get a scholarship to college. If he does that for me I'll give him the damn car-far cry cheaper than paying tuition.

It isn't the age that matters it's the attitude...if you're a rotten 17yo then you'll probably be a rotten 30yo...either way if you're behind the wheel of a 350Z you're still rotten. If you're a good kid, you'll probably be a good adult and having a Z car in HS is not a problem, especially if it turns you into a car guy later. The hobby needs young blood interested in these cars and buying them otherwise we will all be driving Prius's. Lord help us...

Kids are easily influenced and what will suck for you is if getting this car serves as a distraction for your kid and those A's start to drop and that free ride to college you are depending on does not happen.

 

^^^word. I worked my butt off to buy my first car. Though the process of owning it, doing the repairs and upgrades myself, I fell in love with cars. Paying for everything myself helped put the value in perspective.

I have my degree now, got my job, and bought my Z earlier this year. 25 yrs old now...

I'm 17 and drive a 2006 350z. I pay my own insurance, gas, maintenance, and so far, over $12,000 of the car. It was $15,700 used, so I have $3,700 left to pay off. I understand there is a very strong stereotype against the whole parents buying cars their kids don't deserve, and I have seen my fair share of totaled 2009 and 2010 mustangs and camaros from ignorant high schoolers. My Z is waxed monthly, washed weekly, and overall kept very clean. Car is 99% stock ( Perrin shorty antenna and tint). Also, it doesn't see over 3500 RPM because i'm trying to save as much gas as possible, and you are all right, the last thing this world needs is another kid driving 30+mph over the speed limit on the highway or city streets. I have a year and a half of driving experience, the last thing I am going to be doing is hauling *** around every turn for "thrills". I paid for the car by starting my own detailing business when I was 15, selling golf ***** that I fished out of a pond to golfers on a local golf course, and selling a descent amount of old stuff on Ebay I didn't need. Just thought I'd throw it out there....

So you bought a sports car that you don't drive over 3500RPM because you can't afford gas?

 

Thats part of the reason, but mostly because i'm not a dumb *** about driving. I bought the 350z because I loved the way it looked and I knew it would last me for at least 4+ years without major mechanical problems or huge maintenance bills.

If this is all true and you're not bs'ing... A valid beginning.

The things I saw in my age group were horrible. There are those in the 1% that are actually responsible and learn the worth of a dollar through saving for short-term goals. This is where financial responsibility begins. Knowing the value of your money will make you maintain and respect your property a lot more.
