Stay away from 03-04. I had one of the first 03's base model 6spd nothing but problems transmission changed twice, window motor once , window streaks, tire feathering, & even the ac clutch flew off all at under 10k miles and only 6 months old.
Got an 05 base redline 6spd. Currently have 115k and all I changed was clutch and clutch master cylinder at 105k. Been running like a dream. The paint and headlights are starting to get hazzy but normal for a 5 yr old car in Texas heat. Love my z and I can still get on it without no problem. It is true about the upkeeping of the previous owner. Use ur judgement. Can't wait to get a 370z next year.

My 06 "oil drinker" has been awesome to me so far. No issues or anything like that. I have almost 60k on her, and all I have done is regular oil changes and tires.. Thats about it. I also drifted it, never drag raced, did a few top end highway runs, and just recently did a 1500+ mile road trip over 3 days just stopping for gas, food and sleep. I do oil changes ever 5k or so and am always between the 2 dots
Hope it helps, I am the same way when it comes to cars, when I was younger I didn't worry about cars breaking or anything like that because I worked part time and in my down time if something broke i had time to fix it. Now that I am older I worry about things like that.
So I hope this gives you some peace of mind, and judging by what others same you arent going to get something thats as reliable as a DSM(I have owned 3 of those)

I know a guy who was having problems with his battery not getting a charge, then this past weekend his girlfriend helped him jump it, later that day he was over at her house and she looked outside and his Z was on fire. He had to have it towed to the Junk Yard. This guy is an idiot...His insurance was not up to date either. NOW my 350 has a little over 115000 miles on it and I have driven it across country some and I never have problems. I think not being an idiot helps me some...

Second battery today in the 05, only 2 years on this battery. The 03 is still going strong, 120k miles and the valve covers have never been off, also its sitting in 3rd for the point in my class with Redline Time Attack.

New transmission
Window Motors
Window Streaks
Tire Feathering
Half of stock stereo speakers died
Cubby door broke
Rear hatch struts degassed
Fuel filler door sticks
Other than that, it runs fine. 25K miles.

had a yellow 35th anniv 05 for 3 days...got it later in the year for a great deal since the 06's were just released, and then paint along the fenders and bumpers started to flake away. performance nissan claimed it was a factory defect and traded it for a new 06 touring which lasted about 25k mi before it failed the consumption test..

05 base 6mt model. The fuel gauge sending units went crazy and stop working in 2007 and again in late 2009. Just had the sending units replaced. it was about. Parts and labor it was 280.00

I have an 05Z that I purchased in December of 07. I've put 36K miles on it and have had no issues besides regular maintenance. The Z has been the most reliable car I've ever owned.

Reliability depends on the way the car was cared for. Ask for the "Carfax". Ask to see the maintenance records. How was it kept with the previous owner. Garaged, etc. Get the facts on the car you decide to look at. Then you should be able to get a good buy at a good price and enjoy the car with out any money pits. This would go for any used car, suv, truck, etc. Do a little background check on the vehicle you decide you are interested in. Then you know the car history and will be ready.
I have a 2003 Track Model, and it stays in garage under a car cover made for it, has complete maintenance records on it, never missed anything such as even a simple oil change. 19,654 miles on it presently. This is the thing I'm saying, see the history reports, maintenance records, etc. Then you will know.

My '05 bought in Nov '04 has been very good to me. I haven't had any repairs other than maintenance. Even the paint are strong, the only weakness is my factory tint is peeling from the driver's door. I really don't like the brake dust, other than that... I love what you do for me, Nissan.
