my guess would be faster than fast, and quicker than quick.

Are there any concerns regarding engine life with this setup? I'm not terribly familiar with turbo-charging and its effect on an engine. My previous car, a 1999 VW Passat 1.8t, had a mild turbo job done. I replaced the single 3K Warner K03 turbo with a 3K Warner K04 turbo from the B5 Audi S4. Along with an exhaust and a chip from GIAC tuning, I was putting out somewhere in the neighborhood of 230hp. The concern for most of the Audi/VW enthusiasts wasn't the engine's ability to handle the power, but the effect of the boost on the turbo. Is that the same thinking here? I'd hate to modify a car (in my case a mild setup) and have it result in a blown engine.

Vic, any pics of the inside of the car? What gauges does he have in there? A/F, EGT, Boost?

I just saw that purty Z here in Gainesville, FL. Seems like he is doing a cross country with it. I must say it was one nice car, now I know how I want my Z to be, the engine just purred at idle. The exhaust was awesome looking, and that intercooler I saw from a block away. I wish I had more time to chat with him, but it seems like he was in a hurry to leave .

It's tough to say because the Z is such a new car. In general, any time you put forced induction on an engine not made for it, you are going to reduce the lifespan of the engine. How much you actually reduce it is questionable. Additionally, *what* exactly wears out is not yet known. For all we know, this engine could go 200,000 miles with forced induction and no problems. I doubt it, but no one really knows for sure yet. And it's not likely that the engine will just go POOF when its time is up. You'll just get parts that wear out faster than they normally would have and will have to be replaced or rebuilt sooner down the road. (Rings, gaskets, anything else that takes the force of the boost.) It also depends on how much boost you run, how well tuned your FI kit is, etc. You could also build up the engine by using stronger internals and lower compression.

As far as your Passat, the K04 turbo you got was not actually used on the B5-series S4. The S4 used twin K03 turbos. The TT 225 uses a K04, while the TT 180 uses a K03. There are a few people who've upgraded their S4's with twin K04 turbo kits, and that turns the car into a monster.

But anyway, the Audi/VW 1.8t engine is built like a tank. It was designed from the factory for forced induction. That being the case, it will handle boost increases quite readily. However, the K03 and K04 turbos are very small turbos. That's why you get so many turbo problems when cranking up the boost. At 15 psi on the 1.8t engine (which is what most of the 1.8t chips run at) you are very far out of the efficiency range of that little K03 turbo. The poor little guy just starts making heat at that point. That'll wear out your turbo real quick. That's also why you see such major power increases when you put on bigger turbos but run the same boost. A 1.8t with a K04 kit running about 17 psi only gets about 230 hp. But a 1.8t engine with APR's Stage 3 kit (much bigger turbo plus well designed exhaust manifold) runs about 17 psi and gets 280 hp. Same boost... way different power output.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack the thread.

boost and 2 egts in the stock center location. i am going to remount them cleaner when i get a chance, but they fit and look like stock.

the profec b (boost controller) and super-afc2 are still not in final positions...

Vic you are another lucky guy from this board that have driven "The Blue Beast".

Question for Michael,

How much heat is generated from the engine bay now as compared to stock trim?

Happy Thanksgiving,
Jeff

C'mon Michael, it seems like everyone in the city has driven your car. I'm the one who built it and i haven't even driven it yet! Don't push me, i'll turbo mine...

Are you tony from JoTech? I've seen some of your post at the H-Tech forum. Since you built Michael (Skidazzle) custom turbo, during the R&D how much heat increase is being generated from the new set-up?

Thanks,
Jeff

Yeah, i'm Tony, formerly of Jotech. I've moved on and i'm working for Bob Norwood now. Anyways, i'm not sure on the increased heat, you'd have to ask Michael about that. I built the entire kit, but left Jotech before it was running. They were waiting on the fuel components when i left, so i haven't seen the car since it's been finished and running.

The Blue Beast is such an unoriginal name...can we name it something else? How about Papa Smurf's Bastard Child?
