I now this is a noob question but I just don't get it. Everyone says that a stock 350z dynod hits like 250HPish when Nissan advertises it at 289hp. How is this possible that the numbers are off by so much?
Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower before the loss in power caused by the gearbox, alternator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components such as power steering pump, muffled exhaust system, etc. Brake refers to a device which was used to load an engine and hold it at a desired RPM. During testing, the output torque and rotational speed were measured to determine the brake horsepower... and when you see posted dyno numbers by members these are the numbers measured after the horsepower has gone through the drivetrain to the wheels
I get it, Thanks. Is that the same with all other cars? Like the 2008 Ford Mustang says it has 300hp, so would the brake horsepower be down as well i assume? I'm asking this because I'm going to race my friends soon and want to know if i'm going to be way down in hp compared to him.
no the BHP is 300... take about 15% off that and thats prolly what hes close to.. this is an easy question to answer with about 5 mins on google.. stop bein lazy

Only the 350z has hp loss from the crank to the wheels. The mustang doesn't, nor does any car. Its a phenomenon that Nissan just couldn't figure out how to avoid

WRONG. If an engines cylinder are divisible by 4 then there is no HP loss through the drivetrain. 4, 8, 12 etc cylinder engines have no loss, only 6 cylinders and those goofy Mazda rotaries experience this.
