Default battery chargers/maintainers

This year, when I put my CS Performance away for her winter nap, I had decided to remove the battery. After much trouble trying to remove the battery bracket in order to get to the battery, I finally decided to simply disconnect it and hook it up to a charger/maintainer for the winter. Is this sufficient enough? I'm sure it is better than what I did last year which was just leave the battery in the car and disconnect it.

Really? I thought about doing that but I was worried that it may cause problems being hooked up to the battery while it was connected. What is the major benefit to keeping the battery connected while on a charger/maintainer other than not loosing your radio stations, time and above all not having to hoook it up every time you want to start the car and let it run?
