I thought they (Z and M3) were in there last year? M3 is there this year (with the 3 series). It does not matter, ignorance is bliss.

Here is the list.

Car and Driver Names Eight Foreign Models, Including First Hybrid Electric Vehicle, to its 10Best List
Wednesday December 3, 7:01 am ET
Ford and GM Products Round-Out Prestigious List of 2004 Models

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The world's number one automotive enthusiast magazine, Car and Driver, today announced winners in its 22nd annual roundup of the ten best cars sold in America. The Car and Driver "10Best" winners are featured in January 2004 issue of the magazine on sale next week.
Like last year, eight models from foreign automakers and one each from Ford and General Motors make up this year's list of the Car and Driver editors' favorites. The 2004 "10Best" lineup adds four all-new or significantly improved Japanese models: Acura TSX, Honda S2000, Mazda RX8 and the first hybrid vehicle ever to make the list, the Toyota Prius. Also new to the "10Best list" is Germany's Audi S4 Quattro. Rounding out the list is a group of perennial winners: BMW 3-Series/M3, Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Focus and Honda Accord; and a repeat winner in only its second year of production, the Infiniti G35.

This year's Car and Driver "10Best" winners are:

Acura TSX (1) * Honda Accord (18)
Audi S4 Quattro (1) * Honda S2000 (4)
BMW 3-Series/M3 (13) * Infiniti G35 (2)
Chevrolet Corvette (10) * Mazda RX8 (1)
Ford Focus (5) * Toyota Prius (1)
(Numbers in parentheses show total number of times the vehicle has been named to the Car and Driver "10Best" list.)
"Stunning styling, terrific technology, and excellent value are the virtues we certainly appreciate," said Editor-in-Chief Csaba Csere (pronounced Chubba Chedda). "We found them in abundance among the 57 cars nominated for our 2004 awards."

A 13-member panel of Car and Driver editors -- with a combined 292 years of experience -- gathered in Ann Arbor this past fall to determine winners by rating them on a scale from 1 to 100.

While all cars offered in U.S. showrooms by January 2004 are eligible, only a select few make the cut. Finalists must fall below a price cap of $69,000 as determined by multiplying by 2.5 the average transaction price as of Summer 2003, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association. Importantly, in order to qualify as a nominee, the manufacturers must be able to deliver a vehicle for testing as the Car and Driver staff only considers vehicles it can actually drive.

The magazine also re-nominates previous year's winners if they are still available and under the price cap. It then identifies new or substantially upgraded vehicles for the current year. This year, the process yielded 57 nominees.

Car and Driver's "10Best" began in 1983 with the desire to produce a list devoted to automotive excellence. According to Csere, in keeping with the personality of the magazine, the staff did not believe that just one car could represent its diverse readership and circulation. Instead, they selected 10 cars.

Articles and visuals of the 2004 "10Best" winners and nominees can be read and seen in the January issue or on Car and Driver's Web site, www.caranddriver.com . Visitors are encouraged to join Car and Driver Online's interactive forums to tell the magazine's editors if they agree or disagree with their selections.

Because people don't realize the Engine in the RX-8 is complete crap. I'm still trying to figure out how it go international Engine of the Year. There were basically no improvements over what was in the RX-7.

its rotory, for that reason it is unique... it is also revolutionary and completely against the norm. Id say it deserves to be on there, a sports car it is definitly not, but a interesting and innovative car for sure.

So if I was to make an automatic a$$ wiper out of bubble gum, duct tape, and some counter-weight balances, I would be eligible for the nobel prize even though the invention is complete crap and won't last more than a couple of days?

It's not the "10 Best Sports Cars"...it's the "10 Best Cars". If you want a "Top Ten" of sports cars check out Car's recent article. The Vauxhall 220 Turbo owned, but the Z got a nice review.

That said C&D still sucks.

Default well....

i watch it basically every morning.. because i work from 8 to 6...i still cant believe the FORD FOCUS... at least if it was the mustang .... it makes me upset because stupid a** people make the z look like crap.. all i hear is the z is to heavy.. or it will never be like the z32...ill take a z33 over the z32 ... if both were brand new no miles.. the 350z is the best looking sports car in the market right now...the s4's looks cant even match it.. or any on those cars on that list

Nothing like nominating a car with 11 recalls, 7 for major safety issues, 3 of which were for the same seatbelt part (Ford Focus). Morons. Can we say "PAYOLA"?

I don't think this had to do much with which car is really better, but more of the fact that the whole thing was a typical corporate promotional gig. I would be interested in which companies sponsored this.
