I notice a little carbon build-up on my exhaust pipes but i think its because i baby my car too much and lug it around. I was told i need to run it up through the gears once a week after a lot of in town stop and go driving.

My 03 Z has been in and out of the shop because the oil light comes on after 4 or 5K miles post oil change. It is definately burning oil. There is a guy is southern CA with the same problem, and they replaced his engine.

My dealer has me on an oil consumption test. I come in every 1K miles (starting this month) and if the oil level is low 4X in a row, I get a new engine.

I have heard of three people including myself who have this issue.

We have seen a couple cars, including mine, leak oil around the valve cover. All it took was some tightning of those bolts to cure the issue. Be sure to check that as well.

I have almost 30,000 miles on my Z, and so far it has not burnt enough oil for me to notice.

I change the oil every 5000 miles, and am using synthetic or synthetic blend (usually Mobil 1). I never need to add anything between changes.

I have noticed some very slight accumulation of oil around the valve cover, but it hasn't amounted to even one drop yet (just a very slight film in a couple spots).

At this point, I am very satisfied and don't plan on making any changes.

On a side note, the carbon on the exhaust is normal, and not necessarily due to burning oil. It is most likely due to burning a slightly rich fuel mixture, like when running @ WOT.

Thumbs up

Did a recent trackday in the 350ZR. 200 miles up to the track, 100 miles thrashing on the track, and 200 miles back home. Didn't use a drop. Can't say the same for my buddy's Z06.

Just read your thread on this....Seems 5k between oil changes is a bit long? I'm going on my dealer's recomendation of every 3750 miles and I have the dealer do it. Only $20, and they can't ***** about it being done wrong somewhere else, or give me any warranty crap later on.

You misunderstood. 5k = 5,000 rpm during break in. Oil changes I did regularily at 3,000 miles. And, like you, I did all oil changes at the dealership. Hence, they knew I changed my oil religiously.

Sorry, I was talking about "jasonbokamper", who started the 350zmotoring.com thread. He mentions 5k miles between changes. My bad.

5K miles between oil changes should not mean that it is OK that the car is burning oil. This isn't a 1975 Ford...it's a brand new car.

When I brought the car in the first time, the dealer said it had NO oil in it whatsoever. Do I believe them? I dunno. But this thing shouldn't even burn a quart in 10K miles, much less 4 or 5 quarts in 5k.

Sorry to rant...but after $30,000 and:

burning oil
greasy windows
drifting steering
feathered tires
rattling interior
clicking seats

...I have the right to be a little fussy!

I love this car, but it sure has been a headache.
