Default Hydroplaning

So up in the Northeast here, we've been having some pretty bad storms.

Two days ago, I'm driving home while it was raining pretty heavily. I wasn't completely stupid and drove slower than normal and took corners slower than normal. Then comes this corner that's one of those that veer off to a yield sign where you merge with the other lane. I take the corner at 25mph where I normally take it at 30-35mph when dry.

I hydroplane, my rear kicks out and I go into a spin. I chose to steer and brake instead of apply more power (which in hindsight, probably would have saved me maybe or at least minimalized the damages...). I get taken to the guardrail after the spin and smack head on on my driver side corner. Here are the pictures:

Nothing but liability coverage on my insurance because I was going to switch to a different company within this month where I was going to get fully covered.

So this is me right now:

Plus I also locked my keys in my winter beater tonight. I'll be breaking into my own car tomorrow morning.

That is not hydroplaning, you were not going fast enough. So, what condition were yor tires in?

Hydroplaning is generally a front tire phenomena. Water is forced under the front tires. Certainly not at 25 MPH.

What brand front tires?
How many miles?
Photos of tires?

Well, I'm no traffic accident expert, so I'll just say, glad to see you made it through (hopefully not injured). Sucks about the car but those are replacable

even if you had the right insurance that would cover this they would look at your tires and tell you your SOL. as others stated you were not hydroplaning to slow and the rain hasn't been that bad in the future when you hydro plane dont brake it's the worse thing you can do

hydroplaning rarely occurs below 55 mph. However, if any of those conditions are not met, it can happen at speeds as low as 35 mph

same exact thing happened to me in my s2000. I, too, only had liability on the car at that time. needless to say, 3 months of parting out and one month of searching I found my Z. lesson learned: always have full coverage, you can never predict what will happen. I'll post pics of the damage if you guys want.lol

I also live in New York, CNY to be exact. It's been raining pretty good here and there and I've had no trouble. Full treads.

Just glad you're okay. I'm sure you know by now but keep full coverage next time.

Near Death/Collision Stories
Almost ran into a pole last night.
Was going 70 down a poorly illuminated road and knew a corner was approaching, didn't know the road cause I didn't live around there. Didn't have high beams on as I was nice and didn't wanna blind people.
When I got close enough and the low beams illuminated the corner enough, I saw that it was a near 90 degree corner. Slammed on the brakes, jerked the wheel as far right as I could, saw that I was headed STRAIGHT for the pole last minute the rear end fishtailed and I was able to power out of it and missed the pole by a foot. I had adrenaline pumping through me the rest of the night. I think it was fair to say at that point that the sporty nature of the Z and RWD saved me from hitting the pole.

Maybe you shouldn't drive a car anymore because was that your story 6months go and now this.

Yep I've had a lot of bad luck for only the first year of ownership...

It's not even like I'm a shitty driver or drive like a complete d-bag. I autox and have spent time at the track to know me and my car's limitations, things just blindside you. Not to sound like a complete tool but all the times I've ever lost control of the car was due to my tires.

The tires that were on at the time of the accident were Yokohama Advan A046's. Pretty low tread. Was going to be a cheap *** and ride them until I store the car (which was going to happen at the end of the month) and buy brand new tires when I took her out in the spring.

The previous incident, the tires that were on were really cheap Nexens that the previous owner had on the stock wheels. Those were REALLY trash. I tried autoxing with them and even the other instructors that drove my car told me I needed some real tires.

Wish I read this before I did all the stuff on the no-no list.

Damn instincts just told me to steer and brake.

Over and over again we say it, never, ever scrimp on tyres, as they'll bite you. Not good situation for you to be in dude. But I guess life is a hard lesson learned sometimes.

Common denominator is the driver, not the tires.
