Most pros can do gradients now on large format printers. Some cut off solid color sheets which severely limits the possibilities but is much cheaper. On the other extreme there are some that can print onto tranparent decal material.

The shadowing of the stripes being blurred or faded into the LS paint of the car would definitely require them to be painted.
As you can tell, designing for a paint job is a whole other ballgame from designing for graphics. If you're looking at having it painted, let me (us) know so we can come up with some designs better suited for airbrushing (ones on a larger scale as well). Overall coverage of graphics is usually much more limited by the printer / vinyl cutter being used. Painting's obviously only limited by how much you're willing to spend and the talent of your sprayer.
I'd be careful going with a theme that relies heavily on your wheel color. If you decide to go with different wheels down the road you're going to be stuck in that color/tint.

As I hope you're aware, the fades and whatnot on many of our designs are mostly just an idea...the "design" such as the stripes I made could easily be implemented without fades (say instead using a solid grey or silver to edge the bronze or whatever color). Or halftoning (using scaled dots) to do a fade like newspaper or magazine print does can also achieve the effect in vinyl graphics.
I wouldn't rule out anyone's design because of a detail like a fade or whatnot.
I do agree that the tiger stripe design I laid out would best be painted due to the amount of coverage that would be required by the vinyl over complex curves. But look at the RSR drift car...is there's painted or vinyl?
As for color schemes...that lemans sunset ain't gonna work with too many other colors hehe so in my opinion, your pallet is limited not by the wheels, but what else plays well with copper.
Anywho, not trying to rock the boat, just giving you some more feedback and obviously my personal opinion.
BTW, when does this contest end???
