My point is why anyone would use the term/word Ricey (no such word) and associate it with a negative reference? What is it with the term that would even suggest a negative implication?
Personally, I couldn't care less if someone insist on infusing a negative connotation to a "make-up' term like "Ricey;" but definitely it would reflect on one's ability to express oneself.
all said and done, it is definitely not a worth while issue for anyone to fight over.

Just kidding, I'm just bitter that I'm having to work today. But seriously, I don't see how some words are so offensive to some people.
Happy holidays to all, eat some rice and pasta with your ham and be thankful.
Get OVER it! You wrote that it is probably offensive to Asians. I responded that I'm Asian and find the connotations of the word 'rice' not offensive at all. This is my opinon. Why all this commotion over this?
Do you have nothing better to find offense to besides food? What else can Italians do with pasta that I can't(besides eat it and make various decorative ornaments)? Are you an expert on the cultural impact of specific grains by geographic location? What a profession...
No I am not a expert on cultural impact on specific grains by geographic location but rather a person with a sense of pride and honor for my culture. The fact that you are looking at this particular situation about rice as a grain shows me that you have no understanding what this is about.
Ignorance huh - Well you just shot yourself in the foot on this one. You post about how 'rice' and 'ricey' are offensive words to a specific culture, then go on to say you "honestly don't mind when people use it here and there"
You are an interesting character. BTW, thanks for giving me something to do at work today. It's rather slow.

What I said obviously flew over your head. The first couple sentences make no sense whatsoever.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. You are using ignorance in the wrong context. Maybe what you stated above meant that what I said was hypocritical. I still stand behind it being somewhat offensive but I stand corrected (not by you but by myself) that it is when the word is abused.
Likewise. Work is slow for me as well. Its nasty outside.

the truth is, if you think about it, the term rice is very misused
it alludes to the fact that the asians started the whole import scene
so now every time someone sees a modification that they dont like, they call it ricey which would mean that asians are the ones that promoted it
when in fact a lot of other "races" are the ones that have tasteless modifications
the truth is that the word is so widely used that it really shouldnt be offensive
because all ppl mean when they say it is that its ugly
they dont really mean that asians should be condemed because of another persons tasteless modifications

I'm not name-calling but:
I have a friend that once worked as a Valet in Uptown Dallas. He told me about a guy that would pull up in an old Ford Taurus covered in Ferrari Badges and I think it was painted bright red that he called the "Fordari" If only I had a pic of this! Anyways, he said the guy tipped well and was loaded so he was probably just doing it as a joke, but still...

You're right, hypocritical, not ignorant, I did catch that but had to hurry and click submit for some reason (I'm at work). I don't really find offense to much, I suppose. I guess I just don't see food as a racially charged subject, no matter what culture, thus my sarcasm.

Yea, Im just pissed that I have to work Christmas eve plus its raining here in NJ. I just thought that there was more to the word rice than the actual meaning, especially when people use it in a certain negative text. Im over it though. Its Christmas eve, have a safe and Merry Christmas Shovit and everyone else.

Nowadays..especially in a forum like my350z.com with a bunch of Japanese/ Euro/ Domestic car enthusiasts throwing the word rice around it doesn't really bother me at all.
BUT...every once and awhile it'll just bring back bad memories. Back when modded imports were few and the scene was predominantly Asian, the domestic guys would throw bad names at us like "rice" or "ricer". That was a slap in the face especially when this scene was so young and we were trying to find a place for it. Working hard just to get the import cars some respect.
Hearing "rice" was almost equivalent to hearing "beaner" if you were of Mexican decent.
The scene is so crossed over now that the term doesn't mean much anymore...but to some people it still bothers them.
I find it amusing that a thread for people who hate the term "ricey" would really be a thread about ways to classify and put into order things that they would like to call "ricey" How ironic is that?
Would that be like a thread called "who else hates racism" and then the first post says: "racism sucks, but lets make a list of which races it's ok to offend" hehehe. I mean really.
Anyway, not getting ugly, just found it funny. Oh and I'm half Chinese and don't find the term offensive but funny. I live in So. Cal. so believe me I eat and SEE pleanty of rice around here.

Looks like the thread is starting to get off topic, but I thought I'd add some comments. I live in Toronto, and if you've ever visited there, it's the most culturally diverse city on the planet. In fact, just take a ride on the subway during rush hour, and you'll see a nice EVEN mix of asians, caucasians, blacks, hispanics, jews, etc. etc. In particular though, in the northern parts of Toronto, where I live, asians actually make up the majority (over 50%). Even the University I went to was over 50% asian despite being 60 miles away from Toronto.
Anyway where I'm going with this is, I'm asian, and the term "RICEY" is used by me and all of my friends both of asian and non-asian decent.
None of us find it offensive whatsoever, and we always get a kick out of laughing at ricey cars (which incidentally usually belongs to a non-asian -> not stereotyping, just stating the facts). Anyway the point is, I don't think the term ricey has a negative connotation to it anymore, unless you MEANT it in a racial way. To casually say that a car is "ricey" is not IMHO racist, and although it was originally used to mock asians driving/modifying asian cars, it has come to be used by asians alike (similar say, to how blacks use the N word and how gays now use the Q word etc.)
Just my 2 cents.
Oh and by the way, I think the popularity of the term ricey is growing with respect to the rate that the import scene is growing in general. Which means we'll probably just hear it more and more (but fortunately, as a result, it will also get further and further detached from it's original racial intent).

I had Chinese food with rice for lunch, and it was good...yum...yum
It is not about, whether you and I mind the use of the term in a derogative sense; but the point is the world is becoming racially diverse and it is not healthy for our young to be exposed to unnecessary racial slurs; and for us to continue encouraging and perpetuating the term.
Let's face it, the word “ricey” comes from the word rice; and the misconception of some illiterate, hick that actually thought that rice was only eaten in Japan; and eventually used to refer to Asians.
You decide
