Why do these things weigh so much?
Why do these things weigh so much. I mean i got the car for looks but a lil performance isnt a sin. But damn over 3000lbs and seats 2 wow. but ill still love the car just wanna know whats causingall the damn weight. Nissa talks about its lightweight aluminum parts\????????????????????

It's actually 3210 lbs for my 5AT Enthusiast and a 3197 for the manual.
Maybe it's the engine and all the metal needed to keep the chassis stiff? Perhaps it's the extra weight of being RWD?
It's not THAT horrible for a sports car. Keep in mind, even a relatively "light" sports car like the RX-8 weighs 3029 lbs w/"popular options" according to http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/disp...ehicleCode=RX8 . The NSX weighs 3153 w/the manual and 3197 w/an automatic. The base Corvette supposedly weights 3270 lbs (no official specs on Chevy's site).
One funny thing is my 02 Maxima which is much larger inside and out is a whole 8 lbs heavier than my Z.

also keep in mind that to keep down costs, many of the parts are shared between the maxima and other Nissan models. The engine was made to be multi purpose, and be able to put in various models with various needs, thus the lack of focus on bringing the weight down. Various chasis parts are also shared adding to the weight.
Do a search on the forum, this has been covered before. The Z shares the chassis with the larger Infiniti G35 sedan / coupe, as well as portions of the Infiniti FX's. This reduces the cost of the vehicle. The other upside is the excellent crash test results for the Z. The all-out for performance 300ZX TT was too expensive to be successful, so Nissan went back to the original Z concept which was to produce a reasonabley priced, good performance car with shared components.
4cyl vs 6cyl mostly. besides, the Z has always been a heavier GT-style car designed for highway driving, while cars like the S13/S14/S15 have always been typically lighter and designed for canyon carving.
hopefully, after several years of good sales (which is almost where were at now) nissan will remodel the chasis, and possibly add a few n/a hp (a turbo is asking for a little to much) in limited production models. off course this will draw away from the stock 350z model that we all have, but it would also breath some life not only back into sales but also into the fact that the 350z could be an all-out performer with no comprimises from the factory.

My friend finds it odd that my beater Accord only weighs about 2,400 pounds ( 1989 LX, my first car ). He finds it odd because his NSX weighs about 2,900 pounds and so much time and money was spent trying to figure out how to make the NSX as light as possible ( the car is made entirly of alum. frame and all )
For the Z's size I would expect 3k at the most, oh well. I for one can not really feel the weight on the Z at all. I drove a camaro SS and that thing was a fat pig IMO. The Z handles its weight very well.

doesn't the Z weigh a lot because of the platform that it shares with other cars such as Infiniti's FX and various other nissan/infiniti line up. this way the costs are kept down so people like me can afford a 350z. nissan doesn't want to make the same mistakes with the 300zx.
