*whispering* I thought it was cuz the bridges' undersides were exposed to cold air sweeping underneath, so they get colder much quicker and stay that way longer than the roads that were covering the warmer earth.

That almost got me in trouble the other day. Going down the road, thought I was doing 50 or so, looked over and it said 33. Sped up more and it didn't budge. Finally I noticed it said Icy under the numbers

Anyone notice, it defaults to the temp and icy when it's cold. I've been running with the tire pressure showing, to watch how much air is in the little babies. I noticed everytime I got back into the car, it defaulted to the temp and icy when cold out.
And jleighZ, this could explain why you were freakin. But girlfriend, get use to checking the real speedo too!
Today, driving to work they said on a NYC station to watch out for icy conditions. There were accidents all over because of ice. NYC was 38 degrees! You never know where you'll find it. But if ya find it with a Z, your going to be SOOL!

Those of us in the Portland, OR area recognize the 37 degree Farhenheit temp as the air temperature at which "black ice" forms on the road.
Imagine a below-freezing night after a day of rain. Ice forms.
Drive to work with temperatures still below-freezing and you have normal "East-coast ice". Not to worry, we all know how to handle that.
At lunch time the air has heated up to 37 degrees (the temperature at which both my BMW and my Z show "Icy" each in their own way).
That hard ice now has a thin sheet of water over it. If you thought "normal" ice was treacherous, this is MUCH worse. I can walk (carefully) on normal ice. I've seen people slide down a very slight incline of black ice, fall down, and NOT BE ABLE TO STAND UP!
You don't wanna be driving on that, believe me.

yeah, it'll default to any of the settings that could cause hazardous conditions, ie: low gas (well...sorta hazardous) low tire preasure, icy cond.
all you have to do to get the gauges to go back to the setting you had them on is to press the function button once. but even when you do that, the "dte" "psi" or "icy" will continue to flash at the bottom of the gauge until the condition has been remedied.
the low tire preasure (if you have the sensors) also has a warning light that is near your gas gauge that will stay on until you have air in the tires. i personally like the feature. i think it's one more thing that helps us stay aware of teh driving conditions.

Two reasons why it comes on at 36.
First. It is not a totally acurate means of meausement. Our cars do not always give the exact tempearature.

Third, While the temperature at point X may indeed be 37/38 Degrees the temp at point Y may be 32. So if you consider you are in your Z driving at the speeds the Z is capable of attaining than you could possibly be at point X while traveling to point Y. The Z will warn you at 37 because it knows it is possible for you to enter into point Y before it has time to update the temp. And I believe it does this updating every several seconds (20-30?)

Thanks. I haven't gotten to read through the whole manual. One of those "to do" things. I've seen the PSI fuction at work! I love all those fuctions. They really help in knowing your vehicle. We have most all the thingy's that come with the car. Touring model but the navi. Don't need or want it. And it makes a nice place to store the driving gloves and the hands-free mic.
