Default tick ... tick ... tick ... tick

My car ticks.

I believe it to be something with the exhaust. It is most noticable after a drive, after shutdown: tick ... tick ... tick ... tick for about 10 minutes.

I also noticed it at idle while stepping out to get the mail the other day. I can hear it over the engine noise if I am outside the car.

It seems more noticable now that the weather is cooler though I did notice it in the summer as well.

A minor nuisance basically. My Talon used to do it if I ran the bag off of it and then shut it down (after a cooldown of course!).

Anybody else's Z do this?

Thanks,
Elmer.

It's your exhaust pipes cooling and contracting. Metal expands as it gets hot FYI.

Thanks for the reply.

I am aware of the physics behind the ticking. I am asking if it is normal for the Z car to tick for 10 minutes after shutdown from normal driving.

I've owned many cars and none have them have ticked like this one. Perhaps its normal, perhaps its not.

Thanks,
Elmer.

No worries. You didn't come off like that.

If most people's cars don't do it, I will put the car up on ramps and see what I can find. Maybe bend the heat shield a bit. I was actually looking for a few "yeah, mine does it to" replies so that I could leave it at that and spend my time playing XBOX instead.

yeah i noticed it alot at first. for some reason it seemed like the cs 350z i had didn't make as many "ticking" noises as my db, and a slightly annoiying a/c noise also. there is a several month difference in the build dates, and since i know there weren't any revisions then it's probably just in my head.

Maybe you need to bag on it a bit harder?

Thanks for the responses and reassurance guys.

Mine ticks after shutdown also. One other thing I've noticed is a sort of sputter while idling ... about as frequent as the tick. It's hard to describe except that it kinda sounds like air escaping out of a nozzle. Can anyone explain that?

Every car my family has owned has ticked. My Z only does it if it gets pretty warm. I don't see a difference on the temp gauge, but It only happens after a few sessions of WOT.

Mine ticks while on as well. If I leave the car at idle, the ticks are kind of to the beat to "Faith". tick ta-tick ta-tick. F'n George Michael car.
