We are preparing for the arrival of our first Nissan; actually, our first foreign vehicle. I've been told to expect allot of pressure from the dealer in purchasing a "Service Contract"; something I have always frowned upon. I do most of our oil changes and other general maintenance myself; however, I understand that these vehicles should be maintained with a "stamped" maintenance record to aid the re-sale/trade-in value.

What is the low down on these Service Contracts....Worth it or not??? (I've been told a 36 month Service contract is around $1400.00......seems very expensive for oil changes and 15k + 30k mile checks....)

Total Ripoff in my opinion.. Maybe if it was a Lambo or Ferrari..It is a Nissan. You could take the car almost anywhere or do it yourself. You can already by stock oil filters at courtesyparts.com.

You have no obligation to buy any addons. They will try to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. Just say NO THANKS....

1400 bucks.... whow.. I payed 125 Cdn and got oil changes for the life of my car, didnt include the big services, but they shouldnt add up to anywhere close to that amount.

...and other Japanese cars they are a waste of money. The dealers push 'em because they know the amount of repairs they will have to do on these kinds of cars are minimal and most all of the price of the contract turns into pure profit for them.

The only cases I've heard of them working are on less reliable, high cost to repair cars. A buddy owned a couple of late 80s Porsches and he came out way ahead because those cars needed frequent work and could easily run up $2,000 to $5,000 in repairs in a bad year. The warranty he bought saved him thousands.

Well if you think your gettig 1400 worth of service do it. I wouldnt. Frankly, its called profit, something the dealer likes to make.

Dont beleive the resale value, you aint going to make money off the car by having receipts, its just a piece of mind, but your not going to make more.

Yep; i agree....i routinely change oil and filter every 3K miles w/ first one @ 1K. so that's 13 oil and filter changes at 36K or at $25.00/change = $325.00. Add in another $300 +- for 15K & 30K service's... that's right at $925.00....quite a delta from $1400.00.

$1,400 seemd steep. I would think that there's a bit of negotiation to get the price lower. However, I'm not too sure about the extened waranty being worthless. I had a 300z tt and had both trubos replace, had the top end redone, had the read end rebuilt, and part of the trasnmission. I think I paid about $400 for the plan (from nissan) and I know that I saved thousands.

 

400 seems reasonable but 1400 is way outta whack

 

Are you sure that normal maintainence things like oil and filter changes and the scheduled service visits are covered in the $1400 Warranty?
