kind of an old saying "locking something does not keep criminals out, it keeps honest people honest"

meaning, it keeps temptation away. because i doubt someone was checking your car everyday just hoping you would leave it unlocked with the keys in it.

I guess I'm just a pessimist by nature, but did anyone else immediately think of replying with something like this - "It sounds like you were able to get a shower and an alibi with the gf before the cops traced your address and showed up onsite. Kudos, my Zbro."

But seriously, I hope everything works out. Dealing with the insurance companies sucks.

The state has nothing to do with it. It has to do with the policy wording. I challenge anyone to produce a policy which wouldn't cover if the keys are left in the vehicle.

It isn't as if it's a big secret. Cop cars aren't modified to go faster and in most cases, are slower than their civilian counterparts (lightbars & other external equipment create drag).

^ This guy. Here in Indiana there are very few cars which can exceed 150. I only know of one and he's not even a trooper anymore. He actually got caught in a case of chasing a motorcycle down through my town and causing them to go faster and faster until they eventually wrecked. The family of the rider ended up suing the trooper for pushing the rider further. Thus resulting in a new state law, Troopers are not allowed to chase a rider for more than a mile. Also ended up in the state cutting back on their faster cars.

But in all seriousness to the OP, that sucks man. I feel so bad for you and hope that you get your money back from insurance. Good luck!

I can understand that. Just seems like uncommon conversation from an on duty officer.

Unless the cop was literally pushing him with the bumper of the car, what you mentioned is IMO ridiculous. The rider was the one deciding to go faster, the cop wasn't forcing him to do anything. The rider could have pulled over and accepted his ticket for breaking the law at any time.

The lawsuit that you described is the ridiculous kind of nonsense that infuriates me about our legal system these days.

And back on topic… So, are you wanting to keep it and fix it, or praying that it gets totaled out, OP?

I'd fire that ninja you have guarding your car, he wasn't much help. By the looks of it, it'll get totaled and you don't have to worry about it anymore. But that all depends on the insurance adjuster, he can be easy to work with or the exact opposite. I have seen some be stubborn and fix it even though it needed to be left alone and sent to the salvage yard.

Link to the statute limiting the pursuit of motorcycles, please.

I found a pretty good link where the Supreme Court upheld the pursuit of motorcycles and concluded that the responsibility lies in the hands of the person deciding to evade capture, not in the police that are pursuing:

http://www.aele.org/law/2007LRFEB/2007-02MLJ101.pdf

It's hard to beat a ruling from the highest court available, no?

I don't know of any state statutes limiting/prohibiting pursuits; however, most (if not all) agencies have policies governing pursuits.

Also, I did 140 in my z for an hour straight, Iowa interstate in the late hrs on a return trip from zdayz. One thing I learned, even on a well maintained interstate, bridge gussets are not fun. Have fun jumping a z into oblivion at 150 next time you try your hand at boosting cars. Or just review your escape route for flaws lol
