When I have my temp set to the highest, if I try to turn on recirculate, it turns on my A/C. If I turn off the A/C, it turns off recirculate. I realize that this is the way it is supposed to work with the defroster setting, but this happens to me know matter where I have the air directed. And if this is the way it is supposed to work, I don't get it. Why would I not be able to have on the heat and recirculate on at the same time. It has been really cold her lately, and I would apreciate as much heat as I can get.

but that states that they were able to turn the A/C off and leave the recirculate on. When I do that, it turns off my recirculate. hmmm, maybe I do have a problem.

 

recirc only works with the A/C on...

I keep the A/C on year-round but I adjust the temp settings to my taste. The only time the compressor should cycle on is if I am asking the system to make colder air than what is already inside the car. If you are making heat... believe me, you will get heat. Having the A/C on does not mean you are making cold air.

 

than maybe I am just victem to the placedbo effect becuase the air definently feels warmer to me when I turn off the A/C. And can you shed some light onto why recirc only works with the A?C on. If it is a humidity issue, shouldn't they leave me with the contol over it. I am perfectly capable of turning on the A/C if I need it.

 

I'm guessing car manufacturers have decided that recirc should only work with the A/C on... both my Audis did the same thing.. in fact, my 01 A4 would actually switch itself from recirc to outside air all by itself... something about not being good to always have the recirc on. But, you could bypass it by pressing recir one more time.

I don't have a good answer as to why this is the way it is....

I believe the A/C compressor will kick in anytime it is turned on, regardless of outside temp; otherwise it would not remove humidity. Windows in the 350 seem to fog up much more often than my 88 300ZX and it requires turning on A/C to clear them up. Not a big deal as it does not seem to draw much power from the drivetrain, and there is enough to spare anyway.

 

Since the heater is using engine coolant to heat the air, is is so efficient that you can constantly pump air in and out and make the car warmer. for A/C to be efficient, you need to re-circulate the air, bringing in new air will make it harder to reach the desired temperature.

 

So can I sum this up to say that the A/C will alwayts turn on when recirculate is on, and having the A/C on with heat is ok, and it will not actually make the air any cooler.

 

On my previous car, recirculate was a manual feature (a **** to turn). When I was on a secondary road and following a semi, I would engage the recirc so that I did not have to smell the diesel exhaust, but the windows would fog in no time- especially if it was humid or cold outside. I then had to engage the A/C.
Now, it's automatically a one-two punch.
Interior humidity is the issue.

 

I know one thing...with AC left in ON position, I never get inside window fogging....but if OFF, windows almost always fog up when cold out!!

I leave it ON all the time.

 

Can someone please confirm that it is OK for the A/C to be on when I start the car and it's 10 degrees outside!

It just doesn't seem right to me that when I'm trying to warm the thing up in the morning, that the A/C has to be on for the defroster and heat recirc to work. No problems of the lines freezing?

 

Confirmed!

Recirc and A/C are linked so that if you press recirc, the A/C will automatically come on.

Your rear defroster should work without A/C, but your front defroster will turn on A/C automatically.
