that happened to me once, my car got broken into and my alarm went off(in an apartment complex) and i immediatedly looked out my window and saw the car run into the bushes. I immediatedly disabled the alarm on my car and sat next to my window with my ar.15 loaded patiently waiting and hoping he would be stupid enough to come back since he did leave the door half way open. I then snuck out my balcony where i was not visible to him and snuck around all the way to my car very quietly..pulled the door open and pointed my rifle to the back of his head as he kindly removed my stereo. I released the safety and politely told him if he moved i would empty my magazine on that car told him to put the seatbelt on and opened the windows of my car with my fob. The i gave the police a quick call followed by a call to my wife asking her to bring me down my 9mm and to make sure it was locked and loaded. She did and we switched weapons and i stood there and waited about 8 mins for the police to show up then handed it off to them. The story quickly made it around locally and ever since i havent victim of vandalism

ya, so many things can go wrong in court, 1 slip up and its over. but now that i think about it, if we had placed outselves out by the street when he tries to get away he woulda been coming towards us so we coulda felt threatened and then shot him
