Default High 13s--how did you do your break-in?

Just wondering...did you do the factory-recommended or the tunner hard-break in?

Also, how many miles were on your car when you bought it?

I didn't take the car above 4,000 RPM for about 1,200-1,300 miles, however, I did go up to 4,000 quite often.

your ignoring drivers skill. how you broke it in might matter; but drivers skill could make a 13.8 car into a 14.1 car and vice versa.

I would add 1 to Ares' driver's skill. And thats track conditions. But I ran a 13.85/100 and I drove it off the lot like I stole it.

I only had 1500 miles on it when I ran that time. Can't wait till she opens up after 5k. I had track practically to myself. 15+ runs in 3 hours. That helped with my starts. Still ran sloppy 60' though. The Z is difficult to get out of the hole fast with the Potenzas.

Purchased with 14 miles on it.

I go to Byron Dragway. I've been to Great Lakes though. I used to live in Racine.

i'm guessing it's obvious to the op that driver skill is the bigger factor. i think he's wondering how break in affects performance (as opposed to long term reliability) and figured asking the best quarter-milers their method might shed some light. although i kind of doubt there will be any big correlation from a quick informal survey on a web forum.

My Z has 570 km on it now, and i take it easy for the first 10/15 km each time i drive it, so everything is heated up and than i drive it the way it's supposed to be driven... it's also really important to do some engine braking now and again, so the pistonsprings can settle. There is no harm in taking it up to 5000 or 5500 rpm a couple of times in the drive in period.

What i have noticed is that the cars that have had the hard way of breaking in, deliver the most ponys but do not run as smooth as engines that have had the soft break in. But hey... it's a sportscar so let's get the ponys out on the road!

This is a sports car, I have a 72month bumper to bumper warranty on it. I let the car get to normal operating temp. Then proceed to drive the **** out of it

To answer your question, got my car with 798mi on it. I'm sure it was driven hard prior to my delivery. But I didnt put stress on the engine until 1200mi's (ie: dumping throttle).

if breaking it in hard is so rough on it that the engine takes a crap before 72months Im extremely glad I broke it in.

I dont think either method is gonna make the engine croak though.

I think all this is maybe to get 1hp one way or another.

I had 38 miles on my car when I got it. I kept it under 3000 rpm's for about 400 miles then gradually starting revving higher, 4k, 4.5k, then around 5k in 1st. Never went WOT or hit a gear for about 900 miles. Then at like 989 miles my friend in his GTI starts picking on my knowing that I "wouldnt" hit it, but I couldnt resist. Dropped it into 2nd at 40mph, floored it, powershifted it through 4th gear and never looked back. Its run its a$$ off ever since. BTW I ran 13.7& @ 101 with a K&N drop in and crappy head winds at the track when I had around 4000 miles
