Question 3rd party warranty co.s intentionally skewing an inpection to save their $?

Dear techs and writers etc ---

I failed the consumption test but my ext warranty co wants a complete engine tear down done by the dealership so they can inspect the pistons etc

If they determine nothing is wrong I am liable for BOTH tear down nd rebuild (was told ~$6k... seem high to anyone else??)

Have any of you ever seen or heard of an inspector passing something so their company doesn't need to pay for repairs?

Large chunk of change on the line here and I'm not sure what I'm going to do.....

Thanks in advance,
BNH

All warranties are like this, even the original factory warranty. The car manufacturer will ask you to authorize work to be done, and if it is determined that the issue is not covered under warranty, you will be responsible for any and all costs associated with the work.

I had to do this twice with my STi. Third gear let loose at 10K miles. I had to authorize the work to be done and if it was determined that the issue was due to abuse of the vehicle, I would be responsible to pay for the tear down. From there, I was welcome to take (read "tow") the car (in pieces) anywhere I wanted. It ended up that it was covered and didn't cost me anything.

Just before my warranty was ending I had grinding when up- and down-shifting into 3rd gear. Again, I had to sign off on the work and agree to pay if the issue was not covered. They determined that something was not installed properly during the rebuild and it would be covered.

Both times I was agreeing that I would be out almost $2k just to get the transmission out of the car and inspected -- granted that isn't near your $6k.

Authorize the work. If they wont cover it, take your car back and let them take you to court for the bill

Doing that would destroy the original posters credit rating for about the next 10 years. That is definitely not a good idea.
