Default ECU holds back HP for first 4000 miles.

Found out this cool bit of knowledge from a guy on this list. Didn't see it it any FAQ so it should be added!

"The 350Z computer limits horsepower for the first 4,000 miles to aid breakin. I also have the automatic which is much worse than the stick. Most stock 350Z's make 245 to 250 HP at the rear wheels when stock and over 4,000
miles."

So a 16% loss which is more normal.

If this is true, I surely hope they didnt add code to blow the motor after 30k miles

But in all seriousness it seems false and I didnt feel any difference after passing 4k miles.

That is false there is no limitations to horsepower in the first 4k miles for break in. Think of the law suits. For example you buy your 2004 z car and take it to the local neighborhood dyno, and it is lacking 20 horsepower. That would be considered false advertisement. Get it

Hmmm, well he sounded on the up and up. Maybe he just got some bogus info from the dyno guy?

A lot of people say they deffinitly notice some extra power when they get some miles on their cars. But there is no specific mileage that each person says they feel this at. I am sure it is just because the car is getting broken in.

Mazda did this with the FDs, but they put it in the service manual or owners handbook, I forget which one. For the first 20,000 miles the ECU held back some power to let the engine fully break in. This was discussed over on rx8club.com when they first started realizing that they were missing some serious power. I doubt that there would be any lawsuits over this, because by the time the suit went through, the Z would have probably passed the 4000 mile mark.

i'm telling you...i really need to dyno my cars with some people in chicago...i'm at 12000 miles and i feel a big difference. I mean when i first got it...after the break in period(1200) i pushed it a bit...but now...the response of my throttle is really quick(btw i used to drive stick) it's pretty quick as if i had stick and the car pushes me back into the seat more(like the gears hook hard). That is why i really want to see what my z pushes...so chicago peeps let's make a date so i can find out what my Z is really pushing stock. I have a good sense of awareness considering my field heh heh heh...so i'm willing to risk spending($ on dyno) only for the sake of my so called possible "illusion."=)

I am at 15,000 miles on my Z now. I noticed a big difference between the first few thousand miles and now. Of course that just might be the Intake, Exhaust, and grounding kit I added since then...

Seriously, the only difference I felt was in the way I drove the car. After the break in period was over, I drove it hard and feel no difference in performance other than after adding mods.

I also heard from this guys friends uncles cousin that if you turn the radio to 97.1 FM ,roll the window 1/3 down, and open the cup holder you'll get an extra 6 hp at WOT.
I need to buy a dyno and start telling people things like this I'll make a Million in return customers.
Thanks

I've seen two different versions of this urban legend: 2000 and 5000 miles.

At least it appears as though different people are making up the story since they all pick different mileages.

How could you even post something like this unless you know for sure. Another member added to my ignore list.

What's even more rediculous is, "Found out this cool bit of knowledge from a guy on this list."

Who is this guy? No description. Atleast when you lie about something, make up a better story.
